Chaos Magic: Complete Beginner's Guide

What is chaos magic?

Chaos magic is a modern magical tradition that emerged in the late 1970s through the work of Peter J. Carroll and Ray Sherwin. Unlike ceremonial magic (which relies on fixed correspondences) or Wicca (which relies on a specific pantheon), chaos magic treats belief as a tool: you adopt whatever belief system works for the working at hand, then discard it when it is no longer useful.

The core principle is simple: nothing is true, everything is permitted (Hassan-i Sabbah). This is not nihilism — it is radical pragmatism. If a technique produces results, it is valid. If it does not, drop it and try something else.

Chaos magic is sometimes called "result magic" or "success magic" because it measures itself by outcomes, not by tradition or dogma. A chaos magician might use a Goetic sigil on Monday, a Buddhist meditation on Tuesday, and a chaos sigil on Wednesday — whatever works.

The 8-pointed star of chaos

The symbol of chaos magic is the eight-pointed star ( ), representing the eight directions of possibility. It signifies that magic can come from any direction, any tradition, any technique. There is no single "correct" path.

Sigils: the core technique

Sigils are the most widely used technique in chaos magic. A sigil is a compressed intention — a desire reduced to a symbol that bypasses the conscious mind and speaks to the subconscious.

The process has four steps:

  1. Formulate the intention as a single sentence in the present tense: "I AM CONFIDENT IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS."
  2. Remove duplicate letters and arrange the remaining letters into a unique symbol.
  3. Charge the sigil by entering a state of gnosis (intense focus or exhaustion) and projecting the intention into the symbol.
  4. Forget it. The sigil works while you are not thinking about it. Obsessing over the outcome is the #1 reason sigils fail.

Generate your own sigils with our free sigil generator or the Chaos Sigil Generator app. For the full theory, read the Codex Chaoticus.

Gnosis: the altered state

Gnosis is the state of mind in which magic works. It is a moment of intense, focused attention where the conscious mind is bypassed. Two types:

Use our gnosis timer to practice entering gnosis states with structured sessions.

Servitors: autonomous thought-forms

A servitor is an artificial entity created to perform a specific task. Unlike a sigil (which is a one-shot intention), a servitor is an ongoing process that you feed and maintain. Think of it as a magical subroutine.

Creation steps: define the purpose, design the form, give it a name, set the activation phrase, feed it regularly, and retire it when done.

Design your servitor with the servitor design journal or the PSI GYM app. The complete method is in the Complete Practical Treatise on Magical Servitors.

Banishing and protection

Banishing clears the magical space before and after a working. The most common chaos magic banishing is the Gnostic Banishing Ritual (GBR), adapted from the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP) but stripped of traditional correspondences.

Use the banishing ritual builder to customize your banishing. For safety checklists, see the ritual safety checklist.

Chaos magic vs. other traditions

Chaos magic differs from ceremonial magic (Golden Dawn, Thelema) in that it does not require fixed correspondences or a specific pantheon. It differs from Wicca in that it does not worship a Goddess/God. It differs from hoodoo in that it is not tied to a specific cultural tradition. It is a meta-tradition: it borrows from all of them.

Getting started: your first working

  1. Learn the basics: read Chaos Magick for Beginners.
  2. Design your first sigil with the free sigil generator.
  3. Practice gnosis with the gnosis timer.
  4. Charge and forget the sigil. Wait 1-2 weeks.
  5. Record the result in the sigil intention encoder.
