Chaos Magic Fundamentals

By Frater Alek0s ⬢ ⬢ 8 min read

Almost every account of this material gives you either a philosophy or a shopping list. This one gives you thirty days. The route is deliberately unglamorous: paper, one sigil a day for a week, a written log that you will still understand in month two, and no doctrine to believe. If you have read the founding books and felt that something was missing, the missing part is usually a sequence rather than a theory. Everything below assumes you can sit still for fifteen minutes and write honestly about what happened, which is a higher requirement than it sounds and the only one that matters.

Week one, one sigil a day

Days one through seven, one sigil per day on a small request. Not one about money, not one about a person who matters to you. Things like being the kind of person who replies to email promptly, or the kind who finishes what is started. Seven small targets exist so that you experience the whole procedure seven times, and the point of the repetition is the handwriting, not the outcomes.

Each day takes fifteen minutes. Five to write the statement and reduce it, five to draw the figure, five to charge it with the outcome already imagined, and one line in the log with the date and the outcome you will accept. Seven days of that is under two hours total and it teaches the reduction faster than any book. The temptation on day one is to make the sigil beautiful. Draw it badly anyway.

Learning the reduction rather than copying it

The method is documented in Austin Osman Spare's work from the early 1900s. Write the statement in one sentence. Remove the vowels. Assign a shape to each remaining consonant. Drop duplicate shapes. Join what is left into a figure, usually inside a circle with a line through the middle. Six steps and no mystery anywhere in it.

The step people skip is the shape assignment, and it is where the craft lives. Judging each letter's skeleton, so that a looks round and k looks angular, produces figures that resemble the words they came from, which makes them far easier to hold in mind. A fixed lookup table is faster and produces results you can verify. Pick one for your first month and change it later only if you find a reason.

Charging without the drama

Charging means holding the outcome as though it had already happened. That is the whole instruction and it is harder than it sounds, because wanting and recognising are different states and straining produces neither. The methods that work are all ways of changing your condition first: breath discipline, a raised state you built earlier in the day, exhaustion, repetitive sound.

Ten minutes is enough and forty minutes is a warning sign. If you are straining at thirty, something earlier in the procedure was wrong, and it is almost always the statement rather than the technique. A vague or possessive statement cannot be charged because there is nothing definite to hold, so fix the wording and try again rather than adding effort.

Building a log that survives month two

One line per sigil: date, the statement in full, the date you will check, and the outcome. That is four fields and it takes twenty seconds. Nothing else is required, and the log is the component people abandon first because nothing appears to happen while they are writing it down.

Set up a file or a notebook page at the start of week one and add to it daily. By the end of month one you will have twenty or thirty entries, and the first useful thing you can do with them is read them without interpreting and see whether anything clusters. That read is the whole payoff of the practice. It is also the only part that makes you different from a person who tried this for a weekend and quit.

Reaching a raised state on purpose

Gnosis is the term used for a deliberately raised state of awareness, and it is worth knowing that you can produce one without anything supernatural happening. Breath discipline, a fixed physical posture held for ten minutes, a repetitive sound, going without sleep for a night, or cold water all do it. Most people find one of these and get mildly irritated by it, which is the correct amount of effect for a working.

The application is unglamorous. You want a sharpened, slightly altered state in which the statement is vivid and the outcome is already imagined rather than wished for. Practising the state on its own, without a sigil, twice in your first month is the best use of your time. Once you can get there deliberately you can stop relying on the sigil to carry you into it.

Divination as an external input

Short-horizon divination, drawing a card and asking about today, is the fastest available way to interrupt a loop of repetitive thinking. That is its mechanism. The answer is not prediction and the deck is not an authority, but a semi-random image that you did not choose can surface something your own reflection keeps skipping.

Use it daily for two weeks and write the answers down next to your sigil log. Do three: a coin toss for a yes or no, a card for a prompt, and a page of something you have not read before. None of them is more true than the others. The value is the interruption, and the value compounds when you can see in your own writing which of the three you actually reach for.

The sigil you will want to make first

You will want to make one about money, a relationship, or a health question, and the want is a good sign of interest and a bad sign of judgement. Those three categories produce the slowest results, the strongest expectations, and the most elaborate reinterpretations when nothing arrives.

Make it anyway, in week four, after the log has twenty entries. You will discover more from doing it and watching yourself do it than from being talked out of it, and the log gives you a way to see afterwards whether the interpretation you applied was the one you would have applied anyway. That is a useful thing to learn early rather than after a year.

Why the first month stays small

Small targets produce results inside the window, which is what keeps a practice alive. Most people abandon this material after three attempts, and the reason is almost never that the technique failed. It is that the first three attempts were aimed at things that take months to resolve, so the technique appeared to fail, and the abandonment was correct.

This also protects the practice from the failure mode the tradition named for itself. When results are slow and expectation is high, the mind supplies the evidence in between, and after a few weeks you have a private mythology and no data. Twenty small logged workings is the cheapest insurance available and it takes about six hours total.

Reading the founding books without believing them

Liber Null and psi by Peter Carroll and Liber Kaos by John Crowley are short, public, and mostly about permission. Both ask you to experiment, record results, and distrust claims including their own. They are noticeably more modest than the reputation of the movement that grew out of them, and reading them directly removes a lot of the mythology before you build your own.

Read them as documents rather than as instructions. Note what they ask you to do, then do it, then keep your own log. If a passage implies a mechanism you cannot test, set it aside and stay with the four things that are testable: written statement, compression, raised attention, and an honest record.

Finding other people without joining anything

You do not need an order, a teacher, or a lineage, and the tradition's own ethic is experimental, which sits badly with gatekeeping. Everything in circulation is public material. What you actually need is one other person who will read your log and tell you what they see, because self-assessment is where every solo practice goes wrong.

Online communities are variable and the same caution applies to them as to any other group: watch whether people post results, including failures, or only victories. Local groups are better if they exist, since somebody has to hold the same candles. If you cannot find either, the solitary route works fine and the log does the work a group would have done.

The errors that cost beginners months

Four of them account for most wasted time. Starting with an enormous target and concluding the method is broken. Buying equipment instead of learning the reduction. Interpreting every coincidence after the fact while skipping the written record. And reading about lineages and correspondences for months before doing anything, which feels like progress and is not.

The common thread is that all four avoid the uncomfortable part, which is doing a small thing and writing down that it did not work. That discomfort is the practice. If you can sit with a null result and a blank log and turn up again next week, you will do fine in this material. If you cannot, nothing about technique will fix it.

What to attempt in month two

One project that needs several workings rather than one that needs one. Write the outcome once, then make a small sigil each week for the same outcome with different wording, so you are working the target rather than the sigil. The weekly repetition is not a recharge. It is five separate chances to notice whether anything is happening.

Add one element you have been avoiding, which for most people is either divination or a raised state practised deliberately. And read your first month's log in one sitting, out loud if that is possible, marking every entry where the result was ambiguous. That reading is where you decide whether this is worth continuing, and it is a decision you can make from evidence rather than from enthusiasm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start chaos magic with no experience?

Paper, one sigil a day for seven days, and a one-line log entry for each. Fifteen minutes per day, seven days total, targets deliberately small so that results arrive inside the window. Everything you need is free and public, and no membership, teacher, or equipment is required before you begin.

What is the first technique I should learn?

Letter reduction, the compression of a written statement into a glyph. Write the sentence, remove vowels, assign shapes to the remaining consonants, drop duplicates, and join them into a figure. It is six steps with no mystery in it, it teaches you the foundational skill of the tradition, and it takes an afternoon to get competent.

Do I need to believe in anything for this to work?

No. The four testable components, written statement, compression, deliberate attention, and honest record-keeping, do not require any belief about mechanism, and the founding texts explicitly ask readers to form their own conclusions. Working this way you keep what functions and drop the drama, which is roughly the position the tradition's own authors described.

How long before I know if it works for me?

Thirty entries in the log, which at one per day is about six weeks. That is long enough to read them and see whether anything clusters, and short enough that nobody sustains it indefinitely without trying. Most people who quit do so in the first month, and the usual reason is that their first three targets were too large to resolve inside the window.

Should I join an order or take a teacher?

Not required, and the tradition's experimental ethic does not sit well with gatekeeping. What you want instead is one other person who will read your log and tell you what they see, since solo practice fails at self-assessment. Everything in circulation is public. Watch whether a community posts failures as well as victories, which is the honest signal.
