Chaos Magic Fundamentals
Chaos magic is frequently described in terms that make it sound like an outlook rather than a procedure. In practice it is a loop, and the loop has about seven stages. This guide walks that loop from the first sentence to the deadline, with the parts written in the order they are usually done wrongly. The movement arrived in the early 1970s, and 1976, when Ordo Templi Ouroborus was founded, is the conventional starting point. Its two foundational texts, Peter Carroll on experimental self-direction and John Crowley on deliberate cause, both insisted on trying things rather than inheriting them. That attitude is the real inheritance, and it is the reason the sequence below ends with a rule you set in advance rather than with a favourable outcome.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

Step zero, deciding what you are actually testing
Before writing anything, decide what a good result would look like and what a miss would look like. This single decision is what separates the procedure from a sequence of pleasant actions, and it takes one sentence. A test needs a prediction, a deadline and a definition of failure, and most informal practice supplies none of the three.
Scepticism is not a prerequisite here. The movement's founding claim is that belief is optional and the method is what matters, so an unwilling participant is a perfectly usable test case. What is not optional is writing down what you expect, because the value of the exercise collapses the moment the prediction is invented afterwards.
Step one, the intent, compressed to one sentence
Write the aim as a single imperative. Not a paragraph, not a mood, not a description of a desired feeling. One sentence, one outcome, present tense. Aiming at a state of mind produces a loop of self-evaluation, while aiming at a countable event produces something you can eventually mark as true or false.
The compression is not a stylistic preference. Reducing a statement to its load-bearing words is the operation the whole practice is built on, and doing it in words first is what makes the later glyph step mechanical instead of mysterious.
- Name a countable event rather than a feeling or a state of being.
- Use the imperative and keep it to one sentence.
- Cut anything that describes how you will feel afterwards.
Step two, the reduction to a glyph
Take the sentence and reduce it. Drop articles and connectives, keep the letters, arrange them into a compact figure. Letter reduction of this kind is documented in Austin Osman Spare's 1904 work, which is the earliest clear statement of the method, and it is the computational core of everything that follows in this sequence.
Treat the result as a compression rather than a symbol with a fixed meaning. That framing is what makes the glyph reusable, and it is also what stops you from accumulating a private dictionary of meanings that the glyph never carried.
Step three, choosing the instrument and the moment
Pick the object that will hold the glyph and the time that will hold the attention. Traditional guidance favours small, dark, handled things and the hours when nothing else is competing. None of that is magic in the sense of being causally special. It is engineering, in the same way that a good notebook is engineering.
Consistency here is worth more than quality. Using a different object each cycle adds a variable you will not be able to remove later, and the whole purpose of running a defined loop is to keep the variable count low enough that a result means something.
Step four, the charge, kept deliberately short
Attention on the glyph for a fixed and modest span. Ritual reliably produces measurable changes in breathing and heart-rate variability, which is the part of the claim with actual evidence behind it, and the sensation people describe afterwards is mostly the recovery from sustained attention.
A short charge repeated on a fixed schedule is more useful than a long one performed occasionally, because the schedule is what makes the run a run. Ritual duration is also often specified in units unlike clock time, repetitions or candles, and that is a structuring device rather than a claim about physics.
Step five, the dismissal, and putting the object away
Close the working and move the instrument out of sight. Banishing and closing practices exist in every tradition that keeps a notebook, and the reason is practical: an object left in view is a reminder that recruits itself, and a reminder that keeps recruiting is how a one-month experiment becomes a two-year obligation.
None of this requires a belief that anything is listening. It requires only that you be able to stop, and that stopping be routine rather than ceremonial.
Step six, the log entry, written the same day
One line, four fields: the date, the aim, what you did, and what happened in the world. Interpretation goes in a separate column, clearly marked, because the moment an interpretation is allowed into the facts column the record stops being evidence and becomes a place to keep finding what you expected.
A dated log is also the only thing that makes the deadline enforceable. Without it, the memory of a cycle is generous in exactly the places where you were invested, and it will quietly round every partial result up.
Step seven, the deadline, and the rule you pre-registered
Set the review date at step zero and keep it, whatever happens. The rule you registered before the result is the only part of the loop that can correct you, because a rule invented afterwards is a rationalisation and everyone can tell the difference.
Then record the failures as carefully as the successes. The movement's durable contribution is methodological rather than metaphysical: it made it acceptable to test a claim instead of inheriting it. That contribution is gone the moment your log contains only the entries that worked.
Where this sequence usually breaks
Three failure points account for most of it. The aim is written too vaguely to be falsified, so any outcome can be counted as success. The deadline slips, so the run never ends. The log is kept for the wins only, so the ratio of hits to attempts is never actually known.
All three are administrative problems, not metaphysical ones, and all three are cheap to fix with a spreadsheet. The procedure does not need defending. It needs administrating, and the administration is the part almost nobody enjoys doing, which is exactly why it is the part that matters.
What a second run should change
One run teaches you almost nothing about your own method, because you cannot tell which of the many small decisions carried the outcome. A second run is where the method starts to become visible, and the only variable worth changing is the one you were most tempted to leave unexamined.
Change the aim, keep everything else, and the result tells you something about your sensitivity to the intent. Keep the aim, change the instrument or the timing, and the result tells you something about the instrument. Two runs that differ in five ways at once teach you nothing at all, and five-differing-runs is what most people accidentally do when they decide to be more thorough.
- Keep the aim, change the instrument, and you learn about the object.
- Keep the instrument, change the aim, and you learn about your own attention.
- Change both, and you have a story rather than a measurement.
The two questions worth asking at the end of a year
First, how many of your pre-registered predictions came true, and how many misses made it into the log. If the misses are absent, the log was written for an audience of one and that audience was you. This question is uncomfortable and it is the only one that makes the rest of the practice possible.
Second, which parts of the work would you still do if nothing supernatural were ever demonstrated. The compression of a sentence into a glyph is a thinking discipline. The dated log is an accountability instrument. Attention held on a fixed object is a training method. If the answer is that almost everything survives that test, you have found the durable part, and it was never the part that got sold.
The order the steps are usually taken in, and why it fails
Almost every improvised version runs the steps in the wrong order. The instrument gets chosen first because it is the part that can be chosen without deciding anything. The aim gets written afterwards and drifts toward whatever the instrument seems suited to. The deadline is set last and ends up being whenever the interest runs out.
That order guarantees an unfalsifiable outcome, because an aim written to fit the instrument can be read as confirmed by any result at all. The whole difficulty of this practice is contained in resisting that convenience, and the sequence exists mostly to force the resistance to happen at the top of the loop rather than at the end of it.
Recording a result that arrives late
Some outcomes show up after the deadline, and there is a correct way to handle that and an incorrect one. The correct way is to log the original miss on the original date and then open a new line dated the day the outcome actually appeared, noting the delay. Both entries stay.
The incorrect way is to amend the original entry, because that quietly converts a miss into a hit and leaves no trace of the change. A log that has been amended is worse than no log, since it appears to be evidence while being an argument. The delay itself is data, and a pattern of delays is one of the few things a small personal corpus can actually tell you about your own practice.
When to stop a run, and what to write when you do
Stop on any of four conditions. The deadline arrives with no logged result. The practice has started costing relationships, sleep or money you had allocated to something else. You find yourself hiding it from people who would ask reasonable questions. Or you cannot produce the log at all, which means the run never existed as an experiment.
Write a closing paragraph when you stop: the aim, the number of cycles, what the log actually shows, and the single clearest thing you would change. That paragraph is worth more than a successful run with no record, because it is the only artefact that transfers to the next attempt.
Stopping is not a verdict on the practice. It is the normal maintenance operation, and the reason it feels like failure is that the ritual register treats ending as abandonment. A run closed on schedule with an honest summary is a finished piece of work, and it is the only kind that can honestly be repeated.
- The deadline passes with nothing in the log worth counting.
- Sleep, relationships or budget have started to pay for the practice.
- You have begun hiding it from anyone who would ask practical questions.
- The log cannot be produced, so no experiment was actually run.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does chaos magic require belief before it will work?
The founding texts make belief optional, so an unwilling participant is a usable test case. Belief may well change the experience, but belief is not a precondition for running the procedure and cannot be verified from the inside. What is required is a written prediction and a deadline, since without those there is nothing to test and no result to keep.
Is chaos magic dangerous?
The recognised risks are fixation, isolation and disruption of sleep, all of which are ordinary risks of an intense private project. Keep the practice small, keep the log, and tell one person what you are doing. Nothing in the method requires secrecy, and secrecy is the condition under which these habits become hard to interrupt.
What do I need to begin?
Three things: a written statement of intent in one sentence, a reduction of that sentence to a glyph, and a private place to charge it. Everything else sold as essential is either optional or expensive. A notebook and a fixed schedule will carry a practice further than a shelf of apparatus.
How long should I run one experiment?
Long enough to hit a deadline you set in advance and short enough that you will still care when it arrives. Four to eight weeks is the range that most people can sustain while keeping their log intact. The number matters far less than the fact that it is fixed before the first cycle, because a movable deadline cannot fail.
What does a paid tool add to this?
The method itself is free, and nothing about the sequence requires software. A paid purchase usually covers the bookkeeping: sigil generation, dated entries per cycle, and a reminder when the review date lands. That is worth paying for if your logs are the weak link, which is the common case. It is not worth paying for in the hope of a stronger result, because the sequence is unchanged either way.
