A Brief History of Chaos
Chaos magick emerged in the 1970s as a radical departure from established occult traditions. Its founding figure was Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956), an English artist and occultist who developed the modern sigilization technique and the concept of gnosis as the engine of magic. Spare's work was largely ignored during his lifetime but was rediscovered by a new generation of magicians in the 1970s.
The formalization of chaos magick as a tradition began with the publication of "Liber Null" and "Psychonaut" by Peter J. Carroll in 1978 and 1982. These texts established the core principles: belief as a tool, the primacy of gnosis, sigilization as the basic technique, and the rejection of all dogma. The Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT) was founded as the first organized chaos magick order.
