Clarity, Decisions and Focus
Clarity is the most popular target in this whole material and the least specified, which is why it produces so many results that nobody can describe. The word names a mental faculty, and mental faculties do not fail, so an aim built on the word cannot be shown to have failed. The standard diagnosis of indecision in this tradition is not a shortage of information. It is a conflict of criteria, two things that both matter and that point in different directions, and a conflict of criteria cannot be resolved by gathering more information because the missing thing is not data. Writing the aim as a single imperative sentence is what makes the conflict visible, because a sentence with two different verbs attached to it is a sentence you cannot act on. Attentional control is the component with the strongest research behind it, and a clarity working is most effective when it commits you to the ordinary methods rather than substituting for them. The contemplative discipline inside the word, gnosis, is sustained contact rather than an abstract state, and it is considerably older than the movement that uses it. What follows is a beginner's route through one specific decision, in order, over four weeks.

The first decision, named precisely
A decision, not a situation. The difference is worth a full week of attention before anything else is done, because a clarity aim aimed at a situation produces a phrase rather than a decision, and a phrase cannot be settled. Write the decision in a single sentence with a date in it. Whether to take the contract, whether to end the arrangement, whether to apply for the thing.
The test for whether you have a decision rather than a situation is whether you could describe the two or three options and name which one you are choosing. If you cannot name them, you do not have a decision. You have an unresolved situation, and no aim will clarify it because clarification is not what is missing.
A week of attention before anything else
One week of ordinary attention training, before the sigil, before the aim is written in its final form. This sounds like a delay and it is the most useful week in the whole procedure. It is very difficult to write a clarity aim for a decision you have not yet thought about carefully, and thinking about it carefully is itself a form of the practice.
The week does not need to be intense. Ten minutes a day of noticing where the attention goes, without trying to control it, will do more than an hour of forcing. The purpose is to establish what your attention actually does with this particular problem, which is usually something more interesting than what you assume.
The sitting, twenty minutes, five days
Twenty minutes, five days a week, for a month. The length is not important. The regularity is, because attentional control is a capacity that responds to frequency rather than to intensity, and the common beginner pattern of one long session followed by nothing for ten days produces very little.
What you do in the sitting is also not important, within limits. Sitting and noticing attention is the standard and it is as good as anything else. The one thing to avoid is using the sitting to think about the decision, because reviewing the decision is thinking, and the capacity being trained is the ability to hold a question without solving it.
Writing the aim as a test you can fail
The aim for a clarity working should be something that can be counted, and the natural candidate is not the decision itself. The decision cannot be counted, and the week after the decision you will not be able to tell whether the practice helped. The countable aim is behavioural: the number of times you looked at the criteria and wrote them down, the number of times you sat before deciding anything.
A workable sentence names the number, the action and the condition. Something like listing the criteria in order of weight, once a day for two weeks, before any discussion with anyone about the decision. That sentence can fail. Most clarity aims cannot, which is why they produce nothing anybody remembers.
The one criterion that decides the case
Almost every paralysis contains a single criterion that, if you had to name it as the one that matters most, would settle the question. Finding that one is the entire practical content of a clarity working, and it is usually discovered in the act of writing the aim rather than before it.
The method is to list everything that argues on each side and then ask which of those things would still matter if you had to choose the opposite option. The one that stops mattering is not a reason, it is a preference. The one that still matters is the criterion, and once it is written down the decision often makes itself within a day.
Cards, and what they are for
Divination cards and projective tests have a long record in this material and a solid use in clarity work, which is generating options rather than receiving answers. The projective methods work because they access material the conscious self-report does not reach, and that is the same property that makes them useful in clinical settings and unhelpful as prediction.
The technique that works is to draw before you think, and to write down whatever arrives before sorting it. A card that lands on a word you dislike is more informative than one that lands on a word you like, because the sorting is the part that adds nothing. If you find yourself reaching for the deck to be told what to do, put it down; that is a different use and it is the use the tradition warns about.
The record, in three columns
The first column is the aim as written, unchanged for the whole month. The second is a dated note of whether the specified behaviour happened, with a number where a number applies. The third is the decision, as it stood on that date, and how certain you were of it.
That third column is where a clarity working either works or does not, and the reason is that a clarity result is usually gradual. The decision does not flip. Its certainty moves, and it moves in a way you can only see if you recorded it daily rather than at the end. People who remember a sudden morning of clarity are remembering a shift that was accumulating for weeks.
A week where the answer did not change
There will be a week in the first month where nothing changes, and the instinct is to interpret it. A bad week is not evidence against the practice, and it is not evidence for anything. It is a week, and the record's job is to contain it without commentary.
The useful observation is whether the specified behaviour still happened. If you listed the criteria every day and the certainty in the third column did not move, then the practice is being performed and is not yet producing the result. That is a completely ordinary month, and treating it as a verdict is the most common way people lose a working four weeks before it would have read differently.
Why calm is not the result
Feeling settled after a working is not evidence that the decision was clarified, and it is a substitution that happens constantly. Calm can come from having made a decision and from having avoided one. It can also come from a good night's sleep, and it certainly comes from the fact that a ritual has concluded and there is nothing further to do tonight.
The only thing that distinguishes them is the third column, recorded before the calm. If the certainty scores were higher on the days after the working than on the days before, something happened. If they were the same, what happened was that you felt better about a question you had not answered, and that is worth having but it is not clarity.
The second decision, larger
After a month, take a second decision, and make it larger than the first. The reason is that the first decision is nearly always the smaller half of the actual problem, and a practice that only ever handles the small half teaches you that clarity is a matter of tidying up.
The second decision should also be one where the criteria genuinely conflict rather than where one is obviously dominant. A first clarity working on an easy question produces a result almost anyone would have reached by thinking for an afternoon, which tells you nothing about the method. The second one is the one that tests whether the attention training is doing anything.
When to stop training attention
The sitting has a natural end and it is not a failure. Attentional capacity is not an unlimited resource to be maximised, and twenty minutes a day indefinitely produces diminishing returns and eventually a mild preoccupation with the quality of the sitting, which is the wrong thing to be training.
A reasonable stopping point is when the sitting no longer costs anything, or at eight weeks, whichever comes first. The capacity remains afterwards and the standing version of the practice is a few minutes on the days you are about to make a decision, rather than a daily appointment. That version is easier to keep and it is where the value actually is.
What to keep when it does not work
When a clarity working produces nothing, the parts worth keeping are the criterion list, the third column, and the sitting. The sigil can go. The method of listing the things that would still matter under the opposite outcome is a general-purpose thinking tool that has nothing to do with any of this, and it is the most transferable thing in the procedure.
What to discard is the story. Not the aim, not the aim's method, not the record. The story is the part where the result either happened because of the working or did not happen because the aim was wrong. Both of those are unfalsifiable, and a practice that has generated an unfalsifiable story has stopped producing information and started producing material for self-regard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is a 'clarity sigil' so hard to evaluate?
Because clarity is a mental faculty and mental faculties do not visibly fail. An aim named after clarity cannot be shown to have not happened, which means a fortnight of such an aim contains no specification and produces nothing to compare. The fix is to aim the working at countable behaviour, such as listing the decision criteria daily, and let the clarity be the thing you observe rather than the thing you attempt.
Is decision paralysis caused by a lack of information?
Usually not. In the standard account it is a conflict of criteria, meaning two things that genuinely matter and point in different directions, and more data does not resolve that because nothing is missing. Writing the aim as a single imperative sentence exposes the conflict, because a sentence carrying two different verbs is a sentence you cannot act on.
Are divination cards useful for clarity work?
As generators of options rather than as sources of answers. Projective methods have a documented ability to reach material that conscious self-report does not, which is the same property that makes them useful clinically and unhelpful as prediction. The technique that works is to draw before you think and write down whatever arrives before sorting it, and to put the deck away if you are reaching for it to be told what to do.
How long before a clarity working produces a decision?
A month of daily entries is a reasonable minimum, and the result is usually a gradual movement in certainty rather than a single moment of resolution. Clarity that arrives as a flash is retrospectively assembled from weeks of accumulation, which is only visible if you recorded the certainty daily. A week with no change is ordinary and is not a verdict.
What if my working produces calm but no decision?
Then the practice was performed without producing the result, and the calm is a separate phenomenon. Feeling settled can follow either a decision or an avoided one, and the only way to tell is a third column in the log recording how certain you were of the decision on each date, recorded before you interpreted the feeling.
