EYE
One letter produces a surprisingly thin working, and the thinness is the interesting part. Everything the elaborate apparatus of entity work offers you is built on top of a name, a description, and a human being trying to concentrate, and if you strip that back the honest question is what was ever there. This is a critical pass over the whole framework rather than a how-to: what the catalogue actually is, what the office means, what the one hour honestly produced, and what it costs to take the exit the tradition itself offers. The exit is real and available, and it is the most underused option in the literature. Nobody in this material tells you that using a schema is compatible with holding no belief in what the schema describes, and that compatibility is the whole of the practical position.

One letter, and the thinnest record in the set
Single letters make poor entities, and the tradition's own catalogues show it. Where a name carries a lineage, a mythology, a shrine history, or a documented set of offices, a letter carries nothing. There is no prior art to inherit and no descriptive text to interpret, so the working has to be constructed rather than recalled, and construction means you are the author of every property the entity is supposed to have.
This is not a defect to be worked around by reaching for a longer name. It is a diagnostic. The amount of material you had to invent is a direct measure of how much of the resulting experience will be you. Where the catalogue is thick, the risk is that you are being shaped by someone else's imagination. Where it is thin, the risk is that you are shaping an imagined thing with your own. Neither is fatal, but they call for different honesty about what happened.
What the catalogue is: a schema, not a report
Read as a set of rows, a spirit catalogue is a schema. It gives you a name, a rank, a form, an office, and a set of powers, in a consistent grammar, for seventy-two entries assembled from several earlier texts. That is genuinely useful as a writing exercise and as a catalogue of traditional offices. It is not seventy-two reports of seventy-two independent beings, and the difference between those two readings is where most of the confusion in this literature lives.
The schema reading costs you very little and buys you a great deal. It lets you work with the material without claiming the material describes anything external, and it makes the office a design brief rather than a fact about a person. It also makes it obvious which parts of a working are yours: the aim, the narrowing, the interpretation afterwards, the entire decision about whether anything responded.
Evocation, invocation, and the difference worth keeping
The two terms describe different projects and are usually collapsed. Evocation asks for something to appear: a presence, a voice, a felt arrival, a figure in the room. Invocation asks for something to operate through you: a change in what you say, a shift in attention, a decision you then act on. One is a claim about the room. The other is a claim about your own subsequent behaviour.
The distinction is worth keeping because the second is testable and the first is not. If you invoke an office for patience, the record is whether you were more patient, which somebody else can partly verify. If you evoke it, the record is whether something appeared, which only you can report and which your expectation will colour every time. Nothing prevents a person from doing both. It only prevents them from calling the second one evidence for the first.
The office as a description of a function
An office in the catalogue reads like a personality and functions like a job description. It names a capacity and a set of permitted operations, in the vocabulary of a court or an administration. Read that way it is a well-made instrument, because a function can be narrowed, specified, retired, and reviewed, and a personality cannot.
The narrowing step is where most entity workings are won or lost. An office like influence or insight is far too wide to produce any observable difference, because your behaviour under it would be indistinguishable from your behaviour without it. Cut it down until the description could be falsified: not 'discern hidden things' but 'notice, once a day, the assumption I would otherwise not question'. Now there is something to record, and whether the record supports the claim is a question with an answer.
Carroll's exit, and what it costs you
The most influential writer in this tradition said entities are facets of the magician's own mind. The move is a deflation of the whole apparatus: nothing external is being contacted, the invocation is a technique for accessing and directing part of your own patterning, and the risk of the working is dissolved because there was never a separate party to disappoint or deceive you.
The cost is specific and worth naming. If the entity is a facet, then the description of that entity is a description of you, and a flattering description is available for almost any aim you might have. The mechanism that removes the risk of external deception also removes the check on self-flattery. Taking the exit honestly therefore requires doing by hand what the entity was supposed to do for you: narrow the office, write the aim as a command, and judge the result against something written down in advance.
What a first hour can honestly produce
An hour with a name this thin produces very little that can be described as contact. It produces a written aim, a glyph, a charge, a narrow office, and a first entry in a log. If the hour also produces a felt presence, a sudden conviction, an image, or a wash of emotion, that is worth writing down as an event without deciding what it was, because deciding during the event is exactly the point at which interpretation is least reliable.
The temptation in the first hour is to spend it on interpretation rather than construction, and construction is the part that survives. A month later the aim you wrote and the office you narrowed will still be there and will still mean something. The rush of interpretation in the first hour is usually a sign that the aim was too exciting rather than too well formed, and it is much better to under-invest in the first reading and come back to it after you have a record.
The two things that felt like contact
Across a first cycle, two things reliably appear and both are easy to over-read. The first is a synchrony: a coincidence, a memory, or a piece of news arriving at a moment that seems too apt, which is unremarkable given how often a coincidence can be made to look apt by someone who is looking for it. The second is a change in your own state that arrives after the charge, which may be arousal, expectation, or the relief of having done something about a problem you had been avoiding.
Both are worth logging with the time and the content, and neither settles anything. The one distinction that helps is whether the event would have been noticed without the working. If a five-per-cent coincidence is a five-per-cent coincidence, writing it down as synchrony is the beginning of a confirmation engine rather than an observation. Logging everything, including the flat weeks, is what makes the interesting weeks interpretable at all.
A month of nothing, and what to write
A month with no result is the most common outcome and the least discussed. The instinct is to conclude something about the entity, which is unjustified, since a month of no result is consistent with an aim that was too vague, an office that was too wide, a schedule that was not followed, and a genuinely inert construction. Nothing in the empty month distinguishes those four explanations.
So write the four explanations down and leave it there. Do not add a fifth, and in particular do not add a fifth that reassures you, such as that the working is being blocked or that the spirit is testing you. Those explanations are indistinguishable from wishful thinking and they are the mechanism by which a month of nothing gets converted into a month of proof that the working is real. The record for an empty month is three sentences long and the rest of the month is not spent on interpretation.
Inflation, seen from the outside
The old warning against inflation applies to this practice more directly than to most, and it is easy to see from the outside. Inflation is the moment when the name stops being a handle for a technique and becomes a title for the practitioner, or when the working stops being an experiment and becomes an identity. The person who is no longer a practitioner of a method but a servant of a spirit has crossed a line that no one announces, because at every individual step it looked like deepening commitment.
The outside view is more reliable than the inside one here, which is why the log matters more than the experience. If your entries progressively stop recording actions and start recording states, or if the working's importance grows in proportion to how little it produces, that is the signature. The corrective is deliberately unglamorous: keep logging the same four fields, keep the aim in the imperative, and keep the standard for success at the level you set before any of it felt significant.
Narrowing the office after the second charge
The second charge is where most people make their one substantive error, and it is nearly always an error of expansion. Having had a flat first cycle, the natural move is to widen the office so that more can happen, and widening makes the aim less testable with every step until there is no version of the record that could count as a failure.
Narrow instead. Take the office you drafted and cut it again, until the description is something you could verify with a stranger in a week. Then charge the narrower version. The second cycle should feel less impressive than the first, and that is the correct direction of travel: an apparatus that is shrinking toward something testable is improving, while one that is growing toward something impressive is deteriorating.
Where the framework starts working on you
A schema has no capacity to act, but a person committed to a schema can be organised by one, and that is where the risk actually lives. The office becomes the standard you measure yourself against, the rank becomes a hierarchy you place yourself in, the form becomes an identity you adopt. Nothing supernatural is required. A framework that tells you what a figure is for will tell you what you are for if you let it, and the mechanism is nothing more than repeated attention to a description.
The safeguard is to keep at least one part of your life where the framework has no vocabulary. Not as a rejection of the practice, but so that the practice stays a tool you hold rather than a description you are inside. If you find that your mood, your worth, and your relationships all now route through an office in a catalogue, the framework is no longer working on your behalf, and the honest move is to put it down for long enough to find out which of the two it was.
Closing a working you have outgrown
Closings are described with more ceremony than they need and are given less thought than they deserve, which is backwards. A working that has run its course takes up attention, and the attention is the only part that was ever doing anything. Leaving it open indefinitely is how a method that no longer suits you keeps running in the background of your decisions.
Write a closing entry with the same fields as any other: the aim as it was written, what you did, what you observed, and a plain statement of whether the criterion you set was met. Then say in one sentence what you are keeping. Most practitioners keep the record and the technique and retire the name, which is the correct outcome, since the name was a compression and the technique is the part that transfers to a different aim.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I treat a spirit catalogue as real entities or as a working format?
As a format, and nothing in the method requires otherwise. Read as rows of name, rank, form, office, and power, it is a consistent writing exercise inherited from earlier texts. The framework works identically whether the rows describe independent beings or the practitioner's own patterning, and the format reading is the one that keeps you in charge of the aim.
What is the difference between evocation and invocation in practice?
Evocation asks for something to appear, which produces a report only you can make and which your expectation will shape. Invocation asks for something to operate through you, which produces a change in behaviour that another person could partly verify. Keeping the distinction straight stops you from treating a felt impression as evidence for an external claim you have not tested.
A month passed with no result. Does that mean the working failed?
It means four things at once, none of which you can distinguish from the outside of the event: the aim may have been too vague, the office too wide, the schedule not kept, or the construction genuinely inert. Write those four down and stop. Adding a fifth explanation that reassures you is how an empty month gets turned into proof, and that addition is the first step towards the framework organising you.
How do I know when I have inflated a working?
Look for two signatures in your own log. Entries that record states instead of actions mean the focus has moved off the method. A working whose importance has grown in proportion to how little it produces means the commitment has detached from the criterion you set. Both are corrected by returning to the fields you committed to, not by expanding the office or charging again.
Is it worth using a framework you do not believe in?
Yes, and the tradition's own most influential writer did exactly that, treating entities as facets of the practitioner's own mind. The mechanism by which it helps, narrowed intention and scheduled attention, does not depend on the belief. The cost is that a flattering description is available for almost any aim, so you have to do the narrowing and the grading yourself rather than expecting the entity's character to do it for you.
