What Are Runes?
Runes are the letters of a set of related alphabets known as runic scripts, historically used by Germanic and Norse peoples for writing, divination, and magic. Unlike alphabetic letters, each rune carried a name, a sound, and a deeper cosmological meaning.
The word rune itself derives from the Old Norse rún, meaning secret, mystery, or concealed knowledge. This etymology reveals something fundamental: runes were never meant to be transparent. They operate at the level of the implicit, the hinted, and the revealed through contemplation.
History of the Elder Futhark
The Elder Futhark, the oldest and most complete runic alphabet, dates from approximately the 2nd to 8th centuries CE. It contains 24 runes organized into three aettir (families) of eight runes each, reflecting the Norse cosmological structure of nine worlds.
The earliest inscriptions appear on jewelry, weapons, and memorial stones. Over centuries, the system evolved into the Younger Futhark with 16 runes during the Viking Age, and later into the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc with 33 runes in England.
Individual Rune Meanings
Each of the 24 runes carries a primary meaning and a reversed meaning. Fehu represents wealth and abundance upright, but stagnation or loss when reversed. Uruz signifies primal strength and health, or uncontrolled energy in reversal.
The remaining runes follow a similar pattern of dual interpretation. Thurisaz is conflict and defense forward, but barriers breaking in reverse. Ansuz is communication and divine message forward, but deception in reverse. Each rune contains its own shadow.
Reversed Rune Interpretations
Reversed runes are not simply the opposite of their upright meaning. They represent blocked energy, delayed manifestation, or internalized aspects of the rune's nature. A reversed raidho, for instance, does not mean the absence of journey but rather a journey that is stalled, detoured, or undertaken without full preparation.
Common Rune Spreads
The three-rune spread is the most common for daily guidance: past, present, future. The five-rune spread adds objectives and obstacles. The nine-rune spread mirrors the nine worlds and provides comprehensive insight into a complex situation.
Rune Casting Practice
Regular practice builds the intuitive muscle required for runic divination. Cast at least three runes daily, even when no specific question is present. Over time, the runes begin to speak with a clarity that transcends book knowledge.
