The Three-Coin Method

The three-coin method is practical because it is quick, portable, and easy to record. Use three identical coins with a clear distinction between one face and the other. The Yarrow Stalk Method

The yarrow method uses stalks and a more elaborate counting procedure associated with classical accounts of the Book of Changes. It is often performed with fifty yarrow stalks, including a reserved central stalk in some modern instructions, and a sequence of counting and regrouping operations for each line. Depending on the version of the instructions, the method may take considerably longer than six coin tosses. Yarrow is not required to obtain a valid I Ching hexagram, and it is not scientifically more accurate than coins. Coins are best for a portable daily practice because they are familiar and easy to repeat. Yarrow is best when you value a long ceremonial sequence and are willing to learn it carefully. Plum blossom methods are useful when you already understand a particular number system or are working within a documented lineage. Digital tools can be convenient for learning line order and calculating the resulting hexagram, but keep the method visible so that the tool does not hide the convention behind the result.

This prevents the hexagram from becoming a way to seek permission for an answer you have already chosen.
