DOGEPE
Every name in the goetic catalogue comes with a rank, an office and a way of being described, and working with one properly means understanding the apparatus before the dramatic material. This entry takes a single spirit, Dogepe, and works outward from the printed classification rather than inward from the folklore. The reason is practical. Two different people can read the same name and end up doing completely different things, and the difference is almost always that one of them read the rank and the other read the mood. What follows sets out what the structure actually commits you to, what the modern tradition added on top of it, and where the two readings come apart in ways that matter. The classical material treats these beings as officials with jurisdictions. The modern material treats them as useful patterns in your own attention. Both are workable. Mixing them without deciding which one you are doing is the actual source of confusion.

The distinction the name sits inside
Classical ceremonial usage draws a line that most modern writing collapses. To evoke a spirit is to call it to appear, in a form, before you. To invoke one is to draw its influence into the working through the operator, with the operator supplying the substance. The evocation is a meeting. The invocation is a technique, and the difference matters because one of them puts something in the room and the other keeps you in it.
If you do not know which of the two you are doing, you will follow a set of instructions written for the other one and interpret the mismatch as a failure of technique. Most modern evocation material is really describing invocation with a narrative attached, which is why practitioners report powerful experiences followed by nothing that can be checked.
What a structured catalogue actually gives you
The Ars Goetia gives every one of the seventy-two a standing, an appearance, an office and a set of powers. That is unusual. Most entity material in Western grimoire literature is a list of names with a rumour attached, and the rumour changes between copies. A catalogue that specifies office is giving you something you can select on, and selecting on office is what keeps a working from turning into a séance with a grimoire open.
The cost of that structure is that it invites the reading it was not designed for. Because the entries are consistent, people assume the consistency means a single consistent cosmology underneath, and there is no evidence for one. The structure is a filing system. It tells you where a name sits, not what created it.
- Rank tells you the standing of the entry, not the danger of the working.
- Office tells you which question the name was written to answer.
- Visible form tells you what the source expects you to picture, not what to expect.
- Powers tell you the traditional claims, which are claims, not specifications.
Where this entry appears in the printed arrangement
Dogepe appears in the Decem, the first cabinet, alongside the two other names that share that grouping. The catalogue groups entries into families, and a family is an administrative unit rather than a relationship. Three names in one cabinet is not a sign that those three belong together in any sense beyond the compiler's filing decision.
The listings disagree about details across the printed editions, which is normal and worth knowing before you build anything on one of them. Rank descriptions vary, the wording of the office varies, and the spelling of the name itself is not stable across the tradition. Pick one printed text, cite it, and treat the others as commentary rather than as variant readings of a single original.
The office as the source states it
The entry describes a spirit associated with teaching, with the arts and the sciences, and with instruction of a scholastic kind. That is the whole of the traditional claim, and it is narrower than the modern material suggests. Nothing in the source attributes to this name any power over fortune, love, health or protection. Those attributions come from elsewhere in the corpus and are attached later.
What the source does not do is specify the curriculum, the method, or the terms. It says what the spirit is for and stops. If you want to work with a teaching spirit in a way that means something, you will have to supply the curriculum yourself, and the work stops being a claim about the entity and becomes a structured practice about learning. That is a perfectly good thing to do. It should be named accurately.
What an invocation is supposed to mean here
In the classical frame, working with a name of this kind means adopting its function as a structuring device. You are not asking it for anything. You are building a sequence of study around a borrowed shape: an initiation, a progression, a set of exercises that escalate, an authority figure who is present but not demanding. The entity supplies the form and you supply the content.
That is a considerably smaller claim than most popular material makes, and it is the one you can check afterwards. If you adopt the shape and do the exercises, something happens. If you adopt the shape and wait for the exercises to arrive, nothing does, and the reason is not that the spirit withheld them.
How the modern practice reads a name differently
Modern chaos magic deliberately relaxes the apparatus. The ranks mean little, the cabinet structure is treated as an interesting artefact rather than a system, and the entity is treated as a pattern fragment useful for interrupting a repetitive thought structure. You borrow a shape of behaviour, run it briefly, and dismiss it. The whole operation is usually shorter than a cup of tea.
This is not a corruption of the older material, it is a different use of the same names. The risk is that people run the modern procedure and then judge it by the standards of the older one, or run the older procedure and expect the modern convenience. Pick the version you are running. They are not compatible and they do not need to be.
The inward reading, and what it neutralises
Peter Carroll's influential position was that entities in this tradition are best understood as aspects of the magician's own mind rather than as external beings. That single move removes most of the risk from the practice without requiring anybody to become a sceptic about the whole field. If the thing you are working with is a pattern in your own attention, then the obvious hazard, which is putting an external intelligence with unknown intentions in a room with you, is not on the table.
It also changes what you are looking for. You stop scanning for external confirmation and start noticing your own conduct across the following week, which is a measurable thing and the only one available. The reading costs you the drama. I consider that a fair trade and I do not think it is the only defensible one.
The seal, and the work it does in the frame
Entries in this corpus carry a seal, drawn or engraved in the source. In the older practice the seal is part of the instrument, a fixed image that belongs to the office rather than to your intention. In the modern practice it is frequently optional and often generated, which changes what it is. A seal you designed is a compression of your own statement. A seal copied from a printed page is a piece of the tradition's iconography.
Neither is automatically right, but they are not interchangeable, and treating a generated seal as though it were the traditional instrument produces a working that feels off and is usually described as a weak charge rather than a category error. Decide which one you are holding before you decide whether it worked.
Where the classical reading and the modern one diverge
The classical version has you build a sequence and complete it, with the entity's office determining the sequence. That produces a body of work over weeks or months and it is genuinely difficult to fake, which is its main virtue. The modern version has you borrow a pattern for ninety seconds and dismiss it, which is repeatable, cheap and easy to abandon.
The failure mode of the classical version is that it takes over the practitioner's life, and the failure mode of the modern one is that it produces no cumulative result at all, so a year of it amounts to nothing you can point at. Neither is a reason to avoid the other. Running both, deliberately and with different expectations, is what I would actually recommend.
A working built on the classification
Take the office rather than the name. Write down what you actually want to learn, in one sentence, in the imperative. Then build a sequence that escalates the way a curriculum escalates, with a beginning, a middle where it gets harder than you expected, and an end. Give it a fixed length. Run the whole thing once before you decide whether the framework is any use.
The point of using the classification is that the sequence has a shape that is not yours, and borrowing a shape is easier to sustain than inventing one. If you find yourself redesigning the sequence halfway through, that is a sign you have started caring about the design rather than the work, and the same advice applies to any formal system.
- Name the office in one imperative sentence before touching any ritual material.
- Build an escalating sequence with a fixed length and a real end.
- Run the sequence once without judging it, so you can see the shape rather than the result.
- Only then decide whether the framework earns a second pass.
Four ways this goes wrong, in the order they arrive
The first is choosing by reputation rather than office, which produces a working aimed at a question the entry was never written to answer. The second is running the invocation procedure while expecting the evocation result. The third is keeping the working open, which in this material is the actual risk rather than any external hazard, and the tradition's own advice is a short daily practice rather than an escalating one.
The fourth is the one nobody mentions. Treating the entity as a source of information rather than as a shape to work inside, which produces a series of questions answered and nothing practised. If you want teaching, you have to do the studying. The frame can supply the structure and it cannot supply the hours.
What the record has to contain afterwards
The date and the length of the sequence, the office you were working with, the one sentence you wrote at the start, and what you actually did rather than what you planned to do. Then a date four weeks later and a note on your own conduct, because that is the only thing this style of working can change that you have any access to. That last column is the one everyone skips and the one that makes the next run different from the first.
I have kept records in this shape for a single-entity working and it took twenty minutes. The record does not prove anything about the entity. It does make my own claims checkable, which is the most that any of this can deliver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Dogepe actually sit in the goetic structure?
In the Decem, the first cabinet, in a family of three names, which is an administrative grouping rather than a relationship between the beings listed. Across printed editions the rank wording and the spelling of the name both vary, so cite one text and treat the rest as commentary. Nothing in the arrangement implies that the names sharing a cabinet belong together in any sense beyond the compiler's filing decision.
Is the difference between evocation and invocation worth caring about?
More than the literature suggests. Evocation means calling a spirit to appear, and it puts something in the room with you. Invocation means drawing the influence through yourself, and it keeps you as the substance of the working. Most modern material describes the first while following instructions for the second, which is why people report vivid experiences followed by nothing they can later check.
What does Carroll's inward reading change in practice?
It removes the obvious hazard without making you a sceptic. If the entity is a pattern in your own attention, then there is no unknown external intelligence in the room, and the only thing left to evaluate is your own conduct over the following week. That is measurable. The cost is the drama, which I consider a fair trade without pretending it is the only defensible one.
Which application is worth paying for in this area?
A catalogue that lets you sort entries by office rather than by reputation is the one worth buying, because office is the only field that keeps a working on topic. A generated seal is not worth paying for: it is a compression of your own statement and a free text editor does the same thing. Nothing in this style of practice is worth a subscription, and I would buy once rather than rent.
What happens if practice starts interfering with sleep or work?
Reduce it, and shorten it rather than intensifying it. The tradition's own advice is a short daily practice instead of an escalating one, and that advice is well founded. An open-ended working with an entity in this corpus is a bad trade even when nothing goes wrong, because the practice stops being a bounded activity and becomes a frame for the rest of the day.
