VIRACEU
Not every name you find in entity lore comes with a catalogue entry. VIRACEU is one of those, and that absence is more instructive than a solid entry would be, because it forces you to build the working from the material rather than copy an entry somebody else wrote. This guide works through the classical evocation and invocation distinction that most modern usage flattens, describes what the Ars Goetia genuinely gives you for the spirits it does list, and then treats the modern chaos magic position that entities are pattern fragments rather than external beings as a practical licence rather than a dodge. It covers drafting an office from a bare name, why narrowing the office before the charge matters more than any part of the ritual, and where the consent line sits when the entity is an aspect of your own mind.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

A name with a thin documentary trail
When a name appears in entity material with no rank, no form, and no listed office, the first temptation is to treat the absence as a defect. It is more useful as information. It means the name arrived from a channel that was not the Ars Goetia, and the provenance of the name is the first thing worth establishing.
Some such names come from later grimoires with looser structure, some from modern chaos magic projects where entities were generated as distinct pattern fragments, and some from no traceable source at all. The last case is common and it does not disqualify the working. It does mean the authority of the name is exactly zero, and everything you build has to be your own.
The distinction most books flatten
In classical ceremonial usage, evocation means calling a spirit to appear in a visible form. Invocation means inviting its influence to operate through the operator, with no manifestation required. The distinction is not academic. It changes the entire shape of the working, from a confrontation to a delegation.
Most modern usage collapses the two, and the collapse is not neutral. It makes ritual look more dramatic than the classical practice required, and it raises the stakes of the whole operation for no practical gain. If you are working with a name that has no documented form, the invocation framing is the more honest one, because you are not in a position to describe what would appear.
What the Goetia catalogue gives you
The Ars Goetia is the most structured entity catalogue in Western grimoire literature. Each of the seventy-two spirits has a rank, a visible form, a set of powers, and an office, which is a genuinely useful piece of reference design. It tells you what a working with a listed entity is supposed to accomplish before you begin.
That structure is precisely what you are missing with an unlisted name. There is no office to inherit, no form to visualise, no rank to justify the working's scope. Everything in the working has to be supplied by you, which means the drafting stage is not optional. Skipping it produces a working with no defined target, and an undefined target cannot fail informatively.
Where modern practice deliberately loosens the frame
Modern chaos magic treats entities as independent pattern fragments, useful for interrupting a repetitive thought structure. The framing is more relaxed than the ceremonial tradition and it is also more demanding in one specific way: if the entity is a pattern, then it has to be a pattern you can actually identify in your own behaviour.
That reframing turns the question from what does this spirit want into what pattern in my life needs interrupting. It is a much more tractable question and it produces a working with a legible success criterion. A pattern-fragment working succeeds when the pattern stops running, which is checkable, and fails when it does not, which is equally checkable.
Carroll's position and its usefulness
Peter Carroll held that entities in chaos magic are best regarded as aspects of the magician's own mind rather than external beings. This is usually dismissed as a way of making the practice safe, and it is more than that. It is a coherent position that changes what the working is doing.
If the entity is an aspect of the operator, then the working is a technique for contacting a part of yourself that is not currently under voluntary control. That is closer to guided imagery or active imagination than to summoning, and it comes with real advantages. Nothing external is being contacted, so there is no external risk. The contact can be checked afterwards by asking whether a specific pattern in your behaviour changed.
Drafting a working from four words
Start with the name, then write what you want it to do in one sentence, in the imperative, with a narrow verb. Not a category, not a state, an action. Stop repeating the behaviour. Interrupt the rumination before it reaches the second hour. Draft the office before the form, and skip the form entirely unless you have a reason for it.
Keep the office to one sentence. A wide office is the most common drafting error in this kind of work, because a broad aim feels more ambitious and it produces a broad result, which is indistinguishable from a working that did nothing. Narrow offices are the ones that produce a change you can point at, and they are the ones worth charging.
The charge, and the narrowing of the office
A short, fixed sequence: darken the room, read the sentence aloud once, reduce it to a glyph if you work that way, hold the glyph while you bring the target pattern to mind, and state the office. Five steps, no variation, done at the same time on consecutive days. The consistency is what makes it learnable rather than memorable.
Narrow the office during the charge, not after. If the first formulation was broad, say the narrower version aloud and use that. This sounds trivial and it is the difference between a working you can evaluate and one you will describe as successful regardless of outcome, because the office was too large to fail visibly.
Telling enthusiasm apart from an outcome
The session where you charge an entity working is emotionally charged in a way most workings are not. That intensity will read as success if you let it. The distinction is simple and worth keeping: intensity is a feature of the charge, and the outcome is a change in behaviour measured in the following weeks.
Write the office down and file the note. In two weeks, look at the specific pattern you named. Did it run less often, or the same, or more? That answer is the finding. The charge will still feel significant and the feeling is not evidence. Most entity workings that people describe as successful had a broad office, which meant the outcome could be read as anything.
Ink, paper, and the hour you can spare
Pen and paper, in ink, for the office. Writing a working by hand engages a different process from typing and it produces a document you can refer back to without reopening the working. That reference value is the practical reason, not symbolism.
Time is a smaller investment than most people expect. Fifteen minutes of drafting, five minutes of charge, and two minutes of note-taking, repeated on three consecutive days. That is under an hour of total time. The material cost is a pen. Works that require expensive apparatus tend to produce elaborate preparations and small outcomes, and this is one of the areas where the two are most directly linked.
Month two, when the working goes quiet
The first fortnight is where the change is most likely to be visible, partly because the pattern was named precisely and partly because you are watching. Then nothing visible happens for a while, and this is the normal shape rather than a sign of collapse.
The mistake at that point is revision. People change the office, add a second entity, or conclude the name was wrong, usually within a month of the first charge. A pattern working needs the same patience as any behavioural change, which is weeks. Decide at the drafting stage how long you will run it before deciding whether it worked, and hold to that.
The consent line you do not cross
Under the aspect framing, the consent question is internal rather than external, and that is a real reduction in risk but not the end of the matter. A working whose stated purpose is to override another person's decisions is still an attempt to control somebody else, regardless of how the entity is understood.
Keep every aspect-fragment working pointed at your own behaviour. If the drafting produces a sentence with a named person in it, that is a different category of work with a different ethical analysis, and it is not what this material supports. The line is easy to state: the pattern belongs to you, and the working stays on your side of it.
Closing a working you will not finish
Some workings should be ended deliberately, and the closure matters more than practitioners expect. Write the office, write what happened, and record that the working is closed, with the date. A written closure is what stops an abandoned working from lingering as an open loop in your practice.
The alternative is worse. Half-finished workings accumulate, each carrying a small unresolved intention, and the accumulation itself becomes a source of the low background anxiety that makes people abandon the whole practice. If a working has run its term without a change, close it, keep the note, and let the next one start clean.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I do with an entity that has no catalogue entry?
Draft the office yourself and keep it narrow. The absence of a documented form and rank means there is nothing to inherit, so the working has to specify its own target, its own scope, and its own success criterion. Start with the pattern-fragment framing, since it gives you a checkable outcome, and charge the narrower office rather than the ambitious one.
Is it the same to invoke as to evoke?
In classical usage the two are different operations. Evocation calls a spirit to appear, which requires a form to appear in and a caller prepared to witness it. Invocation invites the influence to operate through the operator, with no manifestation. Most modern usage collapses the distinction, which makes the work look more dramatic and does not make it more effective.
Do I need to believe the entity is real?
No. The working functions as a technique whether or not anything external is involved, and the aspect-fragment framing makes that explicit. The belief question is separate from the effectiveness question, and modern practice largely dropped the requirement because it made the method available to people who cannot sincerely hold the entity as an external being.
How long should I run an entity working before judging it?
Set the term at the drafting stage and keep it. Two to four weeks is a reasonable minimum for a pattern interruption, judged on the specific behaviour you named rather than on how the sessions felt. Changing the office mid-term is the most common way these workings get abandoned, because it makes the original test impossible to complete.
Can I work with an entity to affect another person?
Not within this framework. An aspect-fragment working is a technique for contacting part of your own pattern, and a working aimed at overriding another person's decisions is a different act with a different ethical analysis. Keep the named person out of the office. If the drafting keeps producing their name, that is the drafting telling you something useful.
