Entity Lore and Invocation
Entity work is where the classical and the modern readings of this material diverge most sharply, and the divergence has been getting wider for about fifty years. The classical vocabulary distinguishes two operations that most modern usage runs together. It also supplies, in the Ars Goetia, the most structured catalogue of named entities in Western grimoire literature, with ranks, forms, offices and specific powers. Chaos magic then relaxed nearly all of that framework. This page explains what the structure was for, what the modern approach gives up, and where the two readings can be used together without pretending they agree. It is written for people who have picked up an entity name and want to know what kind of thing they have picked up.

The distinction the two words were invented to keep
Under classical ceremonial usage, evocation calls a spirit into appearance. Invocation, by contrast, invites that influence to work through the practitioner. The first produces a presence you address; the second produces an influence you work with and cannot interview.
Most modern usage collapses the two, usually in the direction of the word that sounds more impressive. The distinction matters practically because the two operations have different requirements, different risk profiles and different failure modes, and a person expecting one and performing the other will draw conclusions from the gap. The vocabulary distinction exists so that this confusion can be corrected, and most modern writing removes the means of correcting it.
What the seventy-two entries actually supply
Each of the seventy-two is given a standing, an appearance, a jurisdiction and a list of specific powers. That is an unusual amount of structure for a grimoire and it is the reason the material has survived four centuries of people copying it about.
The structure does three jobs. It tells you what an entity is competent in, which is the practical use. It tells you what calling it inappropriately is likely to look like, which is the cautionary use. And it gives you a handle for remembering, which is the reason anybody can hold seventy-two of them in their head at all.
- Rank: Presidents, Dukes and Kings, which is a claim about scale rather than power.
- Form: what it is described as looking like, which is usually a creature.
- Office: the domain it administers, which is the part you actually select on.
- Powers: the specific things it is said to be able to do.
What the looser reading discards, and what it retains
The modern approach treats entities as pattern fragments rather than as tentities with a will. Carroll's version was that they are best regarded as facets of the practitioner's own mind, which removes nearly all of the risk without requiring anybody to become a sceptic about the practice.
What this gives up is the office structure, and with it the ability to select deliberately rather than by reputation. What it keeps is the name, and a name is worth more than most people credit: it is a compressed description of a pattern, and working with one is a way of working with that description under your own direction.
Select on the stated office, never on the reputation
Reputation inside this corpus is manufactured by four centuries of retelling, and the most visible names are prominent for reasons that have little to do with whether they suit your question. A name that is short and hard to pronounce travels. A name attached to a memorable story travels further.the most visible names are prominent for reasons that have little to do with whether they suit your question. A name that is short and hard to pronounce travels. A name attached to a memorable story travels further.
Select on the stated office instead. If your question is about a narrow domestic or commercial matter, a mid-rank functional entry was written for it, and choosing a top-rank name because it is well known will produce a mismatch that the log will not show you.
Reading the entry rather than the summary of it
Read the entry, not the summary of the entry. Summaries of grimoire material concentrate the dramatic and drop the administrative, which is precisely the part that tells you what the entity is for. If you cannot do that, you have not understood it yet, and an entity you do not understand becomes a surface you project onto rather than a tool you work with.
Then write your own one-line description of the pattern before doing anything with it, in your own words. If you cannot, you have not understood it, and an entity you do not understand is an entity you will project onto rather than work with.
Where the two readings can be used together
They combine better than most arguments about them assume. The classical office gives you a way to select, which is a real practical gain and does not require believing in the entity's autonomy. The modern reading gives you a way to work that does not require a theology, which is what makes it usable by people who would find a theology embarrassing.
The combination is coherent: a name, selected by its stated domain, treated as a description of a pattern, invoked for its influence rather than summoned for its presence. That is defensible within the classical vocabulary and it does not ask you to believe anything in particular.
The seal, and what it is doing
The seal is a piece of the classical apparatus that survives because it does a specific job. It is a container for a name in a form that cannot be read aloud casually, which is useful precisely because a name you cannot say is a name you have to be deliberate about.
It is not a device for trapping anything and it is not more powerful than the name it holds. Its value is structural: it makes the entity a fixed object you can put somewhere, rather than a possibility you have to keep generating. Treating it as a trap is the commonest way the classical material gets turned into something it was not built to be.
The four failure modes, and the sequence they arrive in
First, selecting by fame rather than by office, which produces a mismatch you will not notice until the log shows three months of nothing. Second, treating invocation as if it were evocation, which means expecting an interview and getting an influence and reading the difference as failure. Third, losing track of which name was for which question.
The fourth is the one that matters most, and it is a slow one. Entities become part of a self-image, and adjusting one starts to feel like changing yourself. The sign is that you start defending a name rather than testing it.
- You chose on reputation and the office does not match the question.
- You expected a presence and got an influence and called it a failure.
- You cannot say which of your three entities was meant to do what.
- You have begun to think of the name as part of who you are.
The line that is somebody else's autonomy
This is the hard line in the whole area of entity work. The line belongs to the other person's autonomy. Act on your own conduct, on your own availability and on your own limits. Never work on overruling a stated preference, and never work on the question of what somebody is willing to what somebody is willing to agree to.people's autonomy. Act on your own conduct, on how available you are, and on your own limits. Whatever else is done in this material, leave a person's stated wishes alone, because work on changing what somebody is willing to consent to.
The distinction from the pattern-fragment reading concerns targets rather than entities. A pattern you work on yourself is practice. A pattern aimed at a particular person is an attempt to override a stated preference, whatever the metaphysics claims.rather than about entities. A pattern you work on yourself is practice. A pattern you aim at a specific person is an attempt to override a stated preference, whatever the metaphysics says about it.
One first working, with the record written the same day
Pick an entry whose stated office matches a question you have actually got. Not the most famous one. Read the entry. Write your own one-line description of the pattern. Make a seal, invoke rather than summon, and log the whole thing on the day.
That is enough for a first working and it is enough to tell you afterwards whether the approach does anything for you, which is the only question a first working can actually answer. Anything more elaborate at this stage is equipment rather than method.
Why seventy-two, and what the number does
The number is not arbitrary in the way that is often claimed. Early demonological material had grouped these beings into fixed sets, and the arrangement into threes reflects a structure in the earlier sources rather than an authorial flourish.
The practical consequence is that a catalogue this size is not meant to be read straight through. It is meant to be indexed, and the index is the office. Anyone who has read all seventy-two entries has done something nobody designed the text for and has probably retained less than the person who read the four that matched their problem.
A selection procedure that does not depend on memory
Write your question down in one line. Then read only the office line of each entry, not the description, and mark the ones whose domain contains a word from the question. Then read the descriptions of those, and only those, in full.
This is a fifteen-minute procedure and it will produce a better selection than an hour of reading summaries, because it separates the two jobs. The office line is for selection and the description is for understanding, and mixing them is what produces a dramatic entity chosen for a domestic question.
- One line, in your own words, stating the actual problem.
- Read office lines only, and mark the domain matches.
- Read the full entries for the marks, and no others.
- Choose one, and write why in a sentence before you begin.
The seal, and why it is worth making even if you are sceptical
A seal does a small, concrete job. It fixes a name in a form that cannot be read aloud in a corridor, which means any contact with it is deliberate, and it gives you an object that can be placed, moved and put away rather than a possibility you have to keep generating.
Making one also forces you through the whole sequence once, which is the actual training value. People who skip the seal and jump to the invocation are skipping the part that teaches them whether they meant it.
What to write, and when
Date, the name, the office you selected it for, your question in your own words, and what happened. Written on the day, before you have decided what it meant.
The order matters in one specific way. The summary comes last, and writing it first is the mechanism behind nearly every account of an entity contact that produced a narrative rather than an event. Decide the question first, do the work, and only then say what you think happened.
The distinction that keeps this defensible
There is a version of this practice that requires you to believe an entity is external and autonomous, and a version in which the name is a description of a pattern you work on yourself. The first makes a set of claims that cannot be supported. The second requires no belief at all and produces most of the same practical results.
That is not a compromise or a fudge. It is the reading the tradition's own most influential modern writer argued for, and it has the advantage that the classical office structure still does its job, because the office tells you what pattern you have picked whether or not you think the pattern has a mind attached to it.
When it is time to stop, and what to do instead
Stop when you notice that you are defending the name rather than testing it, when you have started avoiding the log, or when the practice has quietly become about your standing in a scene rather than about the question you started with.
None of those is dramatic and all three are reversible, which is the good news. The correction in each case is the same: go back to a single plain question, use a name you have never worked with, and write the entry the same day. If that produces nothing, it will have told you something the accumulating list could not.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the actual difference between invoking and evoking?
Evocation calls a spirit to appear so you can address it. Invocation invites its influence to operate through you. The first produces something you can question, the second something you work with. Most modern writing uses the words interchangeably, and the practical cost of that is that people expecting a conversation conclude something went wrong when it did not.
Do I need to believe the entity is real for any of this to work?
No, and the most defensible modern position is that these are best taken as aspects of the practitioner's own mind, which removes the risk question without requiring scepticism. What you do need is a clear description of the pattern, because a name you do not understand becomes a projection surface rather than a working tool.
How do I stop picking the same famous names every time?
Select on the stated office rather than on reputation. Look at the domain the entry covers and ask whether it genuinely answers your question. In a catalogue this large there is almost always a mid-rank entry written for narrow practical questions, and choosing it instead of a well-known name is the whole difference between deliberate and habitual selection.
Is working with entities risky in the ways people claim?
The documented risks are fixation, isolation and sleep disruption, which are the same three as everywhere else in this field, and all three shrink if the routine stays short and fixed rather than growing week by week. The specific hazard here is a name becoming part of a self-image, at which point you stop testing it and start defending it, and the warning sign is exactly that shift.
What does an entity app actually give me?
The catalogue itself is public and old, so a purchase buys structure rather than access: the offices laid out so you can select deliberately, the entries searchable while you are holding a question, and a place to log which name you used for what. That is a real convenience for the selection problem specifically. It is worth checking that it does the selection well, because that is the part worth having.
