ZESKIA

By Frater Alek0s ⬢ ⬢ 8 min read

ZESKIA appears in entity material without the apparatus that makes an entity working easy: no documented rank, no inherited form, no listed powers. For a first-time practitioner that absence is the whole problem, because the traditional method assumes you are inheriting an office rather than writing one. This guide is a route through the first working, structured as a sequence rather than a set of principles. It covers why the classical distinction between evocation and invocation matters before you begin, how to read an office without inflating it into more than it is, what the pattern-fragment framing actually licenses you to do, and how to tell a result from a coincidence when the whole practice is internal. It ends with the question of when to close a working early.

How to read a spirit you have never met

Start by establishing what the name actually is, and be suspicious of your first answer. A name with no catalogue entry may come from a later grimoire with looser structure, from a modern project where entities were generated deliberately as pattern fragments, or from a source that cannot be traced. The three cases have very different amounts of authority behind them.

Practitioners who skip this step tend to invent an office and then treat the invention as a discovery. That error is invisible from inside the practice and it is expensive, because the invented office becomes the thing you are working for. Write the provenance down, even when the answer is that there is no provenance. A name with zero authority attached still works, provided you built everything around it yourself.

Evocation and invocation, before you begin

Classical usage distinguishes two operations. Evocation calls a spirit to appear, which needs a form, a circle, and a caller prepared to witness something. Invocation invites the influence to operate through the operator, which needs no manifestation and no witness. Modern usage collapses the two, and the collapse makes the work look more dramatic than the source practice required.

With an undocumented name you are in no position to describe what would appear, which settles the question on practical grounds. Use invocation. You are inviting a pattern to operate in you, and you will judge the result by whether something in your behaviour changed. That is a lower bar than a manifestation and it is the bar that applies.

An office, read without inflation

An office is what the working is for, and the temptation is to make it grand. Ambition, transformation, the death of an old self: these read well and they produce nothing you can check. Narrow offices with verbs attached interrupt rumination, stop a specific avoidance, end a particular habit. They are small and they are the ones that work.

Test the office by asking whether you could tell in two weeks whether it happened. A good office names a behaviour you can count. Stop opening the same email. Leave the phone in another room after nine. Interrupt the loop before it reaches the second hour. If you cannot measure it, narrow it until you can, and treat the narrowing as the drafting step rather than as a loss of ambition.

Entities as pattern, and the licence it gives you

The modern chaos magic position, most associated with Peter Carroll, holds that entities are best regarded as aspects of the magician's own mind. Taken seriously rather than as a way of making the practice safe, this changes what a working is. It becomes a technique for contacting a part of yourself that is not currently under voluntary control.

That is closer to guided imagery and active imagination than to summoning, and the practical consequences are substantial. There is no external risk to manage. You can check the outcome afterwards by asking about a specific behaviour. And you can run the whole thing without any belief about the nature of the entity, which removes the sincerity problem that stops many beginners before they start.

A first hour, in order

Fifteen minutes of drafting. Write the name, write the office in one imperative sentence, write the success criterion in one sentence, write the term. That is the working, and it should be boring. The next five minutes are the charge: darken the room, read the office once, reduce to a glyph if you use that method, hold the target behaviour in mind, state the office aloud. Two minutes for the note.

Then the two minutes are the part people skip, which is filing the note with the date and the office in it. That note is what makes the working reviewable in two weeks, and without it you have an intense evening and no record. Total time is under half an hour and the drafting is most of it, which is a reasonable ratio for this kind of work.

Narrow offices and the ones to refuse

Refuse any office that requires a named person. This is not timidity, it is the clearest line in the whole practice. A working aimed at another person's decision is an attempt to act on a mind you do not have access to, and the aspect framing does not change what is being attempted, only the mechanism by which you are failing to do it.

Also refuse offices that describe a permanent state. Become someone who is never anxious. Stop wanting approval. These have no verb, no countable behaviour, and no term, and they will absorb any outcome you report back to them. What you want is a sentence you could fail, because a sentence you cannot fail is a sentence that cannot teach you anything.

The charge, with the paperwork kept

Do the same five steps on three consecutive days at the same hour. The repetition is not for the entity's benefit, it is for your own, because consistency is what turns a memorable evening into a procedure you can repeat while distracted. Three charges is the minimum that registers as procedure rather than occasion.

Keep the paperwork. Three dated notes with the office written on each one, in a single notebook, in order. This is the entire archive. In two weeks you will not remember the wording of your own office with enough precision to judge it, and the note is the only version that counts. A working without a filed note is a working you will either over-credit or under-credit, according to how the fortnight went.

The first month, read without self-flattery

Set the term at the drafting stage. Two to four weeks, decided before the first charge, on paper. At the end of it, look at the specific behaviour you named in the success criterion and count occurrences as best you can. Better reduction, no reduction, or worse. That answer is the finding.

The temptation at the end of the month is to widen the criterion retrospectively, on the grounds that the pattern shifted rather than the behaviour. Sometimes that is true. The defence is the date on the note. If the criterion was written before the first charge, it is evidence. If you are writing it now, it is a story, and the two are easy to confuse a month later.

Instruments, and the ones that are decoration

A pen, paper, and a way to dim a room. That is the complete list. Everything else available for purchase adds ceremony without adding function, and ceremony has a specific cost here, which is that elaborate preparation makes it much harder to run the working on an ordinary Tuesday when the mood is wrong.

The real test is whether you would do it on a bad day. If your setup requires a specific hour, a clear space, and the right frame of mind, you have built something that only functions when you are already capable of doing the thing you need help with. A five-minute version you do while cooking is worth more than an hour-long version you do once.

Deciding to close a working early

Close a working when the term ends, whether or not it worked, and write the closure down. Date, office, what happened, closed. This is the step that prevents an accumulation of open intentions, and the accumulation is more harmful than any single abandoned working because it becomes a low background sense of unresolved business.

There is one good reason to close early: the office turned out to be misaimed. If after a fortnight you can see that the named behaviour is not the thing that is actually costing you, close the working, write down what you now think the office should be, and start again with the corrected sentence. That is not failure, it is the drafting step working as designed.

The line between contact and inflation

The early sessions feel more significant than the later ones, and the later ones are the ones doing the work. People commonly respond to this by intensifying: longer charges, more symbols, more elaborate framing. The result is a practice that gets more satisfying and less effective, because the intensity has become the point.

A workable discipline is to keep the charge dull. Same five steps, same room, same time, no additions. If the practice starts requiring a build-up to feel like anything at all, the feeling has become the practice. The dull version, run on a Tuesday while slightly irritated, is the one that changes behaviour, and the behaviour is what you are actually working on.

What to write down next

If you keep one record, keep the success criterion beside the office on the same line, and leave space for a number. The office tells you what you were aiming at, the number tells you what happened, and the gap between them is the only thing worth analysing. Everything else in the note is context you will remember anyway.

A useful addition, after three or four workings, is a one-line note on what you would draft differently. Practitioners who keep this across a year end up with a personal method that is far better specified than anything in the books, because it is a record of their own failure modes rather than of the general theory. That record is the most valuable artefact this practice produces.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start with an entity that has no documented background?

Write down that it has no documented background, because that fact determines the whole method. Then draft the office yourself in one imperative sentence, name the success criterion in countable terms, set a term of two to four weeks, and charge it three times. You inherit nothing from the tradition here, so the drafting is the working rather than the preliminary to it.

Do I need to believe the spirit exists?

No, and under the modern chaos magic position it is not required. Entities are treated as aspects of the magician's own mind, which makes the working a technique for contacting part of yourself that is not under voluntary control. The practice functions as guided imagery with more structure, and the outcome is judged by whether a named behaviour changed.

How do I know if the working worked?

By the success criterion you wrote before the first charge, counted at the end of the term. Not by the charge, which is emotionally intense by construction, and not by how you feel about the name. If the criterion is a countable behaviour and the count has not moved, the working did not work, and the useful next step is to redraft the office rather than to intensify the ritual.

Is it safe to work with entities as an beginner?

Under the aspect framing there is no external risk, because nothing external is being contacted. The real risks for a beginner are practical rather than supernatural: drafting an office that names somebody else, running a working so elaborate it only functions on favourable days, and abandoning it without writing the closure. Those three are avoidable and they are where beginners actually get into trouble.

How long should I run a single entity working?

Two to four weeks, decided in advance and written down. Long enough for a behavioural change to register if one is happening, short enough to prevent the open intention from accumulating. The main discipline is not changing the office mid-term, because a changed criterion cannot be compared to anything and the test stops meaning anything.
