Chaos Magic Fundamentals
Most descriptions of chaos magic are either history lessons or encouragement. This one is a single working, followed from the first sentence to the review date, with nothing skipped and nothing added. The tradition's actual contribution was procedural rather than metaphysical: it made it respectable to run an experiment instead of inheriting a claim. This protocol is what that looks like in practice, on a small target, with a written record that will still be readable in a year. It uses no lore, requires no initiations, and can be abandoned at any point without leaving anything unfinished.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

What you are actually going to do
One intention, small enough that you will know whether it happened. One glyph. One charging. One divination afterwards. One entry in a log. That is the entire cycle, and it is enough to learn the whole of what chaos magic claims to teach, because the point is not the outcome but running a self-designed procedure with a recorded result and being willing to look at it.
Most practitioners who get nothing from this material are running large intentions with no definition of done, and no record, and then reading meaning into whatever happens next. Fix those three things and the tradition becomes something else: a very lightweight habit of deliberate action under uncertainty.
Stage one: an intention you can score
Write the aim as a single imperative sentence that can be marked true or false by someone who never meets you. Something with a date attached, a number attached, or a countable completion. The test is whether a stranger could look at your life in thirty days and tell whether it happened. If the only honest answer is that you will feel differently, you have written a mood, not an intention.
Chaos practice is unusually strict about this and the strictness looks like pedantry until you have tried it. Vague aims produce results you cannot evaluate, results you cannot evaluate get interpreted favourably, and favourable interpretation is the actual failure mode of the whole enterprise.
Stage two: reduction, done properly
Reduce the sentence to letters. Drop the vowels. Collapse repeated letters to one. Assign each remaining letter a shape, using the conventional basic shapes or your own consistent set. Draw the resulting glyph once, carefully.
The reduction is the part beginners rush and the part that carries the most weight. The sentence is being compressed into a form you will carry, and compressing it badly produces a glyph that does not mean anything in particular. It does not need to mean anything supernatural. It needs to be a stable, legible reduction of one specific sentence you wrote.
Stage three: draw it from memory
Put the page away. Tomorrow, draw the glyph without looking at it. Compare the two. If they are recognisably the same, the reduction has held. If they are not, your letter-to-shape assignment was unstable, and you should fix that before going further.
This stage is the entire methodological contribution, and it is worth being blunt about that. What you have built is a compression with a checksum. If you can reproduce it under the ordinary forgetting that happens overnight, then the statement really was reduced rather than merely written twice. Nothing occult is claimed; the check is simply a test of whether the encoding function.
Stage four: charging without drama
Sit down with the glyph and the sentence. Read the sentence aloud once, look at the glyph, and then sit in silence for ten to fifteen minutes. That is the whole procedure. There is no required visualisation, no entity to appease, no candle, and no correct state of mind to reach.
You will find accounts that describe elaborate charging, and you can try them; the tradition does not forbid it. But the simple version is the one worth standardising on, because consistency is what lets you compare workings against each other. Ten minutes of sitting with an encoded intention, repeated on schedule, is a practice you can actually keep.
Stage five: one divination, recorded
After the charging, make one small divination: a coin, a set of dice, a handful of stones, a yes-or-no draw. One, not four. The instrument has to produce a small set of possible outcomes so the reading is actually informative rather than atmospheric.
Write down the result before you interpret it. This is the step that makes the practice an experiment rather than a mood, and it is the step most often skipped in favour of interpreting first and recording the interpretation afterwards. Write the raw result. Then, separately, write what you think it means. Comparing those two lines over a year of workings is more useful than any single divination.
Stage six: the log entry
One line per working: date, intention, glyph reference, divination result, interpretation. Five fields, no more. Do not add a quality column unless you have run this for two months already, because a quality column in week two becomes a source of self-scoring rather than data.
The log is the deliverable. Everything else in the cycle is cheap to redo; the log is the only part that requires you to have been honest on a given evening, and it is the reason people who keep one get better at this and people who do not, do not.
Stage seven: the review date
Set a review date before you start and do not look at the intention's outcome until then. This is the step that most reliably converts the practice from self-entertainment into something informative, and it is the step almost nobody takes.
The reason is structural. Before the date, you are reading your own behaviour as evidence about the intention, and you will find evidence either way, because humans find evidence for what they are attending to. After the date, the observation is external and cheap. Two weeks of not thinking about it is the cheapest accuracy improvement available in this whole field.
Where the history fits, briefly
The name comes from the Chaos enthroned passage in The Book of the Law, and the affiliation with that older current was deliberate rather than accidental. The conventional starting date for the modern movement is the founding of the Ordo Templi Ouroborus in 1976, and the two texts that established the method are Peter Carroll's Liber Null and psi and John Crowley's Liber Kaos.
Both are short, both are largely instruction rather than doctrine, and both insist on experiment over inheritance. That is why you can read them in an afternoon and be doing the work that evening. The historical framing matters only insofar as it explains why the procedure is as lean as it is.
What this protocol does not claim
It does not claim that the glyph does anything. It does not claim that intention shapes external events. It does not claim that the divination received anything from anywhere. It does claim that you will sit down on a schedule, do one specific thing, and write down what came up, and that doing this repeatedly changes how you approach problems you did not previously know how to approach.
This is the tradition's durable contribution and it is methodological, not metaphysical. The permission to test rather than inherit is what distinguishes it from a framework that asks for acceptance first. Someone who works this way for two years has learned something real about their own attention, and they have not needed to believe anything about the mechanism.
Scaling it up honestly
Once a few cycles have gone into the log, widen the aim. Not the ambition, the definition. A weekly cycle with a countable outcome teaches more than a daily cycle with an atmospheric one, because it produces review dates at a rate you can actually process.
Some people go on to build a small planned working with several stages and one divination at the end. That is a reasonable destination, and the general structure scales without changing: statement, reduction, reproduction check, scheduled charging, single reading, written record, delayed review. Keep those seven elements in that order and you can build larger structures without losing the discipline that makes them worth doing.
Stopping, and what to keep
Every practice in this tradition has a natural stopping point, usually after a sustained run where the log has told you something. Keep the log. It is the only artefact of the whole exercise with lasting value, and it will be interesting to reread precisely because you have no memory of what you were hoping for.
If you stop and later restart, restart with a new intention rather than resuming an old one, and do not go back over old workings trying to interpret them with hindsight. The record is a record. It was made under specific conditions, and later knowledge of the outcome does not change the quality of the reading at the time.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a complete chaos magic working involve?
Seven stages: a scorable intention, a letter reduction, a memory reproduction check, a short scheduled charging, one small divination, a one-line log entry, and a delayed review date. Each stage is cheap and the whole cycle fits in one sitting plus a few minutes on the review date.
How long should the charging be?
Ten to fifteen minutes of sitting with the glyph and the sentence. Nothing in the method requires more. Longer workings are a personal addition, and the only argument for keeping them short is that a procedure you can repeat is worth more than an elaborate one you cannot.
Do I need to believe in any of this?
No. The method was explicitly designed so you can run it as an experiment rather than an act of faith. If you track your readings and outcomes honestly, the practice teaches you something about your own attention without requiring a claim about what the glyph does.
Why set a review date instead of checking immediately?
Checking immediately means interpreting your own behaviour as evidence, and you will find supporting evidence either way. A delay of two weeks turns the observation into something external, which is the only cheap accuracy gain available in this kind of work.
What if my log shows nothing happened?
That is a valid result and you should write it down as one. A high proportion of null outcomes is what you would expect if the glyph has no causal role, and recording that honestly is more informative than any single apparent success. Try a different form of intention, not a more elaborate rite.
