Love, Attraction and Relationships
Love magic gets a harsher reception in this field than any other kind, and most of the criticism is correct. This piece takes the objection seriously enough to build the practice around it, and then asks what remains once the objectionable parts have been removed. What is left is a narrower set of methods than the genre advertises, and a much clearer account of where the line sits and why. It is written for practitioners who want to work in this area without being the person who caused harm to somebody who did not ask for it, which is a smaller and more useful goal than the one usually advertised. The sections that follow are ordered so the objection comes first, the methods that survive it come second, and the operational question of what to write down comes last, because that is the order in which these decisions actually have to be made.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

The strongest form of the objection, stated plainly
A sigil aimed at a specific named person is a working that requires them to be involved without their having agreed to it. Everything else in this field that attracts ethical argument does so in the abstract. This one has a person on the other end of it who will experience consequences they did not choose and cannot audit, and the practitioner will not know what they experienced.
The objection is not a debate about mechanism. It holds whatever you believe about whether the sigil does anything, because the harm, if any, comes from the behaviour around the working rather than from the working. Somebody who plans around a person's likely response has done something to them regardless of what the glyph is made of.
Why the stated position makes this worse
The usual account says your own intention is what does the work. Taken at face value that is a licence to aim anywhere, since nothing in the formulation distinguishes between your own attention and another person's autonomy. A practice whose theory of action is your own will has no internal mechanism for asking whether the aim is yours to set.
The move that makes the position defensible is narrowing the aim. Work on your own conduct, your own availability, your own boundaries, and treat anything requiring another person's participation as outside the frame. That version survives contact with the objection, and it is a considerably smaller practice than the one usually sold.
Reconciliation occupies a different category
Restoring something that already existed is a different act from producing something that did not, and the difference is not metaphysical. In the second case you are the whole cause. In the first case there was a bond before you arrived, the two people were participants in it already, and your work is at most the reason one of them stopped trying.
This does not make it harmless. Repeated work on an existing bond is still pressure on a person who did not ask for it. It does change the category, and the category is what determines how much caution the working deserves.
Escalation, and why the metaphysics is beside the point
Occult sources describe repeated workings against the same target as escalating, and they describe it as a warning rather than a result. Even if you reject the framework entirely, the description matches something ordinary: repeated attempts to influence a specific person produce increasingly narrow thinking, which is also the condition under which people do damage they would not otherwise do.
The practical reading is that the third working tells you something the first two could not. Not that the sigil failed, but that you are now doing something you would not describe to the person. That is the signal to stop, and it arrives before any of the metaphysics is settled.
What is actually available, once the aimed version goes
More than most of the genre admits. There is a whole category of work aimed at your own availability, which is a genuine problem in a crowded life and one where the standard advice is surprisingly bad. There is work on your own patterns, which is where most of the practical difficulty in relationships actually lives and which nobody sells because it does not scale.
There is also divination used as a thinking tool rather than a forecast, and a considerable amount of tradition sitting in a single place. None of it is aimed at anybody, and all of it is available on the same terms as the rest of this field.
- Work on your own availability, which is measurable and underdiscussed
- Work on your own patterns in a specific recurring situation
- Divination as a way of organising a decision you are avoiding
- Anything that requires another person's participation, left alone
How a general record would be conducted
The same protocol as anywhere else in this field, with one extra column. Name the result, fix the window, log two lines a day, pre-register what would change your mind, review on the date you wrote down at the start. For any working that concerns a third party, add the question of what you would do if they told you to stop, and answer it before you begin.
That last question is the whole practical discipline in a single line. Most of the harm described in the sources could have been prevented by a practitioner who had been required to state in advance what they would do on being told to stop, in writing, and to treat having no answer as disqualifying.
Where the traditional material draws its line
Nothing in the traditional sources promises that a named person will come around, and the sources that appear to promise it are the ones worth reading sceptically. What the sources do offer is a framed ritual structure, a vocabulary for thinking about attachment, and a set of cautions about escalation that were written by people who had watched it happen.
The genre's actual claim, read carefully, is about the practitioner's state rather than the target's behaviour. That is a smaller claim, and it is one the practice can actually support, because it is the only one where you have any evidence to gather.
Where a third party is involved, and why that is a hard line
Other people's autonomy is not yours to spend, and this is not a position peculiar to the occult. A great deal of ordinary manipulative behaviour is defended by exactly the same argument about intention doing the work, and the defence does not become sound because it is phrased in terms of intention rather than of effect.
The workable rule is short. Work on yourself, on your own behaviour and your own boundaries. Where somebody else's preferences are in play, the working stops. If that leaves too little to do, the honest conclusion is that this corner of the field is not available to you, which is a real answer even though it is a disappointing one.
How practitioners tend to answer that objection
It mostly does not, and the silence is the most useful thing to notice. Advice content in this area tends to address the mechanics in detail and the ethics in a paragraph at the end, usually about consent in the abstract rather than in the case in front of you, and the reader is left to apply a general principle to a specific decision alone.
The people who handle this well are the ones who make the operational change rather than the disclaimer. They ask who is affected, what they have been asked for, and what you will do if the answer is no. That is three questions and about thirty seconds, and it settles most cases before any consideration of mechanism arises.
A sequence you can actually run
Start with yourself for four weeks. Pick a recurring situation rather than a person, describe it in one sentence, and log what you did in it. At the end of the four weeks, write down what the pattern is, because the pattern is nearly always more interesting than the person was.
Then decide, in writing, what you are and are not going to do. List the categories you will work on and the categories that are closed. Keep the list somewhere you will see it, and add to it only in the direction of restraint. That last clause is the one that matters and the one almost nobody writes down.
- Choose a recurring situation, never a named individual
- Run four weeks with a two-line daily entry
- Write the pattern down at the end of the fourth week
- List what you will work on and what is permanently closed
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is love magic the most scrutinised corner of the field?
Because it is the only category where the practitioner is normally aiming at a specific person who has not agreed to be the target. Every other kind of work in this field has an ambiguous edge, and this one has a person standing on the far side of it who will feel the consequences without having chosen to.
Is there any version of this that is defensible?
A narrow one. Work aimed at your own availability, your own patterns and your own boundaries is not the same act and does not carry the same objection. Reconciliation of a bond that already existed is a weaker case than attraction, though it is still not free of it. Anything requiring another person's participation is out.
What does the tradition actually promise?
Read carefully, the sources promise the practitioner a change in their own state, not a change in the target's behaviour. The sources that appear to promise the second are the ones to read sceptically. A narrower claim is also the only one where you can gather any evidence about whether your own practice is doing anything.
Is it worth buying a tracker before starting work in this area?
A tracker helps most here precisely because the temptation in this corner is to keep re-reading the working rather than the record. A log that shows four weeks of a pattern you can check is the thing that keeps the record honest, and paper will do it. Buying one is convenient, not necessary.
What if I have already worked on someone repeatedly?
Stop, write down how many workings and over what period, and treat the count as the finding rather than the sin. Escalation is the documented pattern and the count is the only measurement you have. Do not attempt any corrective working aimed at the same person; the correct move is to stop and to record what happened so that the next decision is made with the history in front of you.
