FOVADERMOS
This is a set of field notes from a working that should not have been started, written out because the pattern is common enough to be worth recognising and because the failure was instructive in ways that have nothing to do with spirits. The aim was another person. The method was unremarkable: a sentence, a glyph, a charge, a fortnight of follow-through. Every step was performed correctly. The problem was present in the first sentence, and no amount of care afterwards could remove it. What follows covers the objection as a rule rather than as a feeling, the moment at which you would have to show somebody the notebook, what repeated attention to one target actually does to the practitioner, and the one form of love working that survives the kind of scrutiny this one did not.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

A working that should not have been started
The aim was written on a Sunday afternoon with the window open. It named a specific living person, described an outcome that person had not been asked about, and did not contain any step that required their participation. That last clause is the one that should have stopped the whole exercise, and it was noticed at the time and noted as a curiosity rather than as a reason to stop.
The sigil was well made. The charge was given with genuine concentration. The follow-through was diligent for eleven days. Nothing supernatural occurred, which surprised nobody afterwards. What did occur was that the two weeks made the practitioner unusually attentive to signals in the other person's behaviour, and that attentiveness was itself a change in the relationship that nobody had intended or asked for.
The objection, stated as a rule
The classical objection to this kind of working is not that it fails. It is that it is aimed at someone who did not consent to being aimed at, and that a technique which works through your own will cannot be prevented from working on whoever is in range. A spell for your own attention affects your own attention. A spell for a person affects the field around a person, and that field contains them whether or not they agreed to the arrangement.
The declared position of the tradition, that the practitioner's intention is the active ingredient, is accurate and is exactly why the problem exists. If the intention is what does the work, then a strong intention aimed at someone else's life is a strong intention pointed at a person who has no vote. Rejecting the metaphysics does not dissolve the objection; it makes the objection worse, because what remains is a person quietly reorganising their own attention around another human being.
The moment you would have to show the notebook
Somewhere in the second week there was a party, and the notebook was in a coat pocket, and the practitioner found themselves scanning the notebook's contents mentally while talking to the person the working was about. Not straining to do it. Doing it automatically, in the middle of a conversation, while also being present for the conversation. That is the moment to take the working seriously, because it shows the aim has already moved from the notebook into a general disposition.
Ask the concrete question rather than the abstract one. If the person in front of you asked what you had been doing with your evenings for a fortnight, and you answered fully, would they be comfortable? Not would they be flattered, not would they be impressed, but comfortable. A working you would not describe to its subject is a working you are doing to yourself, whatever the sentence says.
Cascading, and how fast it goes
Repeated attention to one target does not stay steady. It compounds. The first week produces a few extra glances. The second produces a habit of constructing explanations for things that were not signals. The third produces a version of events organised around what the notebook wants to have happened, at which point the notebook is generating its own evidence and no external input is required.
The pattern is described in the literature as cascading, and the description is worth taking seriously even if every metaphysical claim around it is rejected. What cascades is not the practitioner's influence on the other person. It is the practitioner's organisation of attention, interpretation and self-report around that person. It is measurable, it is fast, and it is the actual mechanism by which a love working damages the person running it.
What a no looks like when you are not listening
The clearest available signal arrived in week three as an ordinary sentence in an ordinary conversation, and it was not registered as a signal because the practitioner was still in the middle of the previous chapter. Recognising that a boundary has already been stated, and treating it as settled rather than as something to be re-tested, is the single most difficult skill in this entire area and the one that gets least practice.
The pattern is consistent enough to be worth naming in advance. The person becomes less available without explaining why. The suggestions you make are not taken up. The subjects you raise get a brief non-response. A person avoiding a topic is telling you something, and a working run against someone who is doing that is a working run against a boundary that has already been drawn.
The reconciliation question, honestly answered
Reconciliation workings are treated as lower risk than attraction workings, and the reason given is that the bond already existed. That reason holds only if the bond is still wanted by both people. In this case it was not, and the reconciliation framing was doing something specific and less noble than it appeared to: it made the aim feel like restoring something rather than introducing something.
The honest test is whether you would welcome the reconciliation if it happened tomorrow, from them, without your notebook being involved. If the answer is a genuine yes, the framing may be honest. If the answer is a yes with conditions attached, or a yes that requires them to be available again, then the aim is an aim about your own situation and should be written as one.
What the practice did to you rather than to them
The most reliable outcome of the fortnight was internal and not the intended one. Attention became sharper and less relaxed. Sleep got worse for a week, apparently from anticipation rather than from anything having happened. The relationship became harder to think about without activating the whole apparatus, which is a considerable cost for something that produced no result at all.
This is the ordinary shape of an aimed working that does not land: the practitioner pays. Attention spent on a fixed target narrows, the material that would have been available for other purposes is occupied, and the narrowing itself changes how the situation reads. Anyone who has run a long project for a person who is not available knows the feeling without needing a metaphysical vocabulary to describe it.
When to hand the working back
There is a clean moment at which the working can be closed without drama, and it comes when you can answer the show-the-notebook question honestly and the answer is uncomfortable. Write the aim on a fresh page, read it as though the person named were reading it, and notice whether you feel anything other than the wish that they would not. If the only thing you can produce is the wish, the working is over and has been for a while.
Closing it properly means taking the glyph out of the daily rotation, not simply stopping the glances, because the glances survive the decision. It also means not converting it. The temptation to reframe a failed working as a working about oneself is strong, and the reframe is sometimes accurate, but making it retroactively is how the pattern gets installed rather than seen.
The one form of love work that survives scrutiny
Aimed at your own conduct, the same technique is fine and there is a great deal in it. A sentence that says you will answer the phone, or that you will stop checking whether someone has written, or that you will not send a third message, is a working whose target has consented by being you. The technique, the charge, the daily maintenance, all of it works the same way and none of it reaches outside the practitioner's own decision-making.
The distinction is not subtle once it is stated: does the aim describe something the other person would have to do, or something you will do? The second category contains a large amount of useful practice. The first contains a small number of aims that were consented to and a much larger number that were not.
What to write instead of a sigil
When the working is about your own part in a relationship, a plain written sentence is usually enough and the apparatus adds nothing. Write what you will do, in the first person, in a form you could show somebody. The test is not whether it sounds ceremonial. It is whether it is specific enough that a person could tell you had done it, and whether you would be willing for them to know that you had committed to it.
This is not a retreat from practice into self-help. It is the same technique aimed at the only target that can consent, with the compression step dropped because there is no need to hide the sentence from anyone. Practitioners who move their whole practice into this category generally find they get more done, and they find it costs less.
Aims that dissolve under their own logic
Some aims do not survive being written in the imperative. If the sentence has to become somebody will come to me for me to have wanted a different outcome all along, the sentence was never the aim. The same applies to aims that require the target to have felt something, or to have been thinking about the practitioner, or to have changed in a way that would be visible to the practitioner specifically. Those are descriptions of a wished-for state of someone else's mind, and they cannot be compressed into a glyph because there is no single act to point at.
Genuine aims survive. An aim names a thing that a person does, on a schedule, and that you can verify from the inside. A wish names a thing that a person feels, at a time of their choosing, which is why the wish never becomes a task and why the apparatus built around it is always going to be a way of avoiding the task.
The line, and the cost of crossing it
The line is not a matter of degree. Small aims at named people and large aims at named people are the same act with different intensities, and the intensity is the part that is easy to underweight when you are the one writing the sentence. There is no version of this that is only a little bit pointed at someone who did not ask for it.
Crossing it costs something specific and recoverable. The cost is attention, sleep, and the ability to read the situation plainly, and all three came back within a month of stopping. The part that did not come back as quickly was the habit of constructing explanations, which is the actual mechanism and which survives any number of closed workings. Knowing which of your own habits is the active ingredient is the most useful thing this whole exercise produced.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is any love working acceptable if the aim is gentle?
Intensity is not the deciding variable, consent is. A gentle, well-meant aim at a person who did not ask for it is the same act as an aggressive one, and the metaphysical claim that intention is the active ingredient makes that clearer rather than less clear. The relevant question is whether the subject would be comfortable knowing, not how forcefully you meant it.
Why is reconciliation considered lower risk?
Because the bond supposedly already existed, so the aim is framed as restoring rather than introducing. That only holds if both people still want the bond. If one of them has withdrawn, the reconciliation framing is a way of describing your own situation in nicer terms, and the aim has quietly become a request that they return.
What is cascading in practical terms?
The compounding of attention, interpretation and self-report around a single target. Extra glances become a habit of inventing signals, and the habit of inventing signals becomes self-confirming because the record is being written by the person reading it. It moves faster than most people expect, and the same pattern appears in long unrequited projects outside any ritual context.
Can I redirect an existing working towards myself?
It can be worth doing, but only honestly, and the honesty matters more than the redirect. If the practice genuinely is about your own conduct, say so plainly and rewrite the aim. If the redirect is there to preserve the hope while avoiding the discomfort of closing it, the working continues to run on the original aim and the notebook will show it within a fortnight.
Does the failure mean the technique does not work?
It means nothing of the kind. The technique was never aimed at a measurable outcome, which is why it produced nothing measurable, and the fact that it produced nothing measurable is the correct and expected result. The useful conclusion is about the target rather than the method: aims that name another person's interior life cannot be checked, so running them produces a self-monitoring practice rather than a change in the world.
