HEXORIUS
A sigil aimed at another person is the single most examined ethical question in modern occult practice, and the objection to it is not mystical. It is structural. When you write a statement of intent that names a specific human being, you have written a document about them that they never agreed to, and you have attached your own wanting to it. That is the whole problem, and it survives every attempt to soften it with tradition. This guide works through the objection properly rather than around it, sets out where the boundary sits in practice, and explains what remains available once you accept the boundary. It is aimed at the reader who has already found a sigil generator and is about to point it at a person, and who would rather be told the truth than be told that consent is a matter of intention.
Put this into practice

The objection, stated without any mysticism in it
Here is the argument in its plainest form. A specific person has preferences. You do not know them, and you are not entitled to them. A glyph naming that person and requesting that they feel something specific about you is a request that overrides their preferences, and it is made without their knowledge or participation. The traditional defence, that intention determines the working, is exactly the problem: if your intention is the operative ingredient then the working does precisely what you intend, and what you intend concerns someone who had no say.
The defence usually offered is that a pure intention cannot harm, since nobody has done anything to anybody. That defence is about the practitioner rather than the target, which is the recurring structural problem in the whole genre. It is entirely possible to hold an unfounded belief about what somebody thinks of you, act on it, and cause real damage to a real relationship, with no spirits involved anywhere in the chain.
Why the movement's own position makes this sharper
Chaos magic states plainly that the practitioner's will is the operative ingredient. That is a useful and honest thing to say, and it is worse news for love magic than a vaguer position would be. A method in which intention is the mechanism cannot be used on someone else's behalf without doing exactly what the intention specifies. The tradition's pragmatism is what makes the ethical problem real rather than theoretical.
This is why the framing of every love-magic course as a self-development tool is worth examining closely. Nothing in the method confers power over another person. What it confers is structure on your own attention, and the person named in the glyph receives nothing except the consequences of your subsequent conduct.
What remains once the boundary is accepted
A considerable amount. Everything that operates on your own behaviour survives intact, and it is where most of the measurable value sits. Your own availability, your own tone, your own follow-through, your own capacity to stop contacting someone who has asked you to. These are things you can change, and changing them changes the interaction, because interactions are made of behaviour.
Reconciliation work sits in a different category again. Aiming at the restoration of a bond that already existed, between two people who once chose each other, involves far less asymmetry than manufacturing attraction in a stranger. It is not exempt from the consent question, since one party may not want the bond restored, but the prior consent is a real feature and it changes the analysis.
- Work on your own availability and what you offer, not on the other person's feelings
- Restoration of an existing bond ranks lower-risk than manufacture of new attraction
- Any glyph naming a living third party requires their actual, current, revocable agreement
- Repeated working against one target is escalation, and the tradition treats it as a warning
Cascading, and why the tradition is right to warn about it
Occult sources describe repeated love magic against the same person as cascading: the working returns the outcome to the practitioner and strengthens the fixation rather than resolving it. You can reject the metaphysics and keep the observation, because the behavioural pattern is real and well attested. A person who performs the same working weekly against the same name is not performing an operation on that person. They are running a loop in their own attention.
The practical test is simple and it does not require belief in anything. Ask whether the working has made you more available to the person, or more consumed by them. If the answer is the second, the working is operating on you, and the escalation the sources warn about is already underway regardless of what is happening at the other end.
The first thing to do before writing anything
Write down what you actually want, in a sentence that does not name anybody. Not a description of what you want them to feel, but a description of what you want your own conduct to be. Write it in the imperative, as a command to yourself. This is not a semantic trick. A sentence that names a third party and a sentence that names your own behaviour are not two ways of saying the same thing, and only one of them survives the consent test.
If the rewritten sentence is thin, that is information about the original. A request for another person to love you is not a specification of any behaviour of yours, and a practice that requires you to fill that specification will either fail or hand you an obsession instead.
Turning the sentence into a glyph
Reduce the letter by letter to a glyph, using whatever method you already use for work that does not raise this issue. The reduction is not where the ethics live and it is worth saying so, because a lot of material dresses an ordinary graphical act up as a technical one. A glyph is a compressed statement. Compressing a statement you are entitled to make changes nothing about your entitlement.
Draw it by hand if you can. A hand-drawn glyph carries the marks of the moment it was made, which makes it harder to treat as a permanent fixture of your emotional life, and that is a real benefit on this particular kind of work. A generated glyph on a phone screen invites you to keep it, and keeping it is part of the fixation pattern.
Charging it, and the part most people rush
Charge it on your own conduct rather than on the other person. If the sentence asks you to send one clear message and then accept the reply, that is something you can do and they never have to know about. The charge is short, deliberate, and done once. Repetition during the charge is a well-worn route to overthinking, and overthinking is where most of the harm in this material happens.
Then dismiss it, which means putting it somewhere out of sight and not looking at it again for the length of your observation window. For relationship work the window should be weeks rather than days, because the outcomes you are actually watching for are behavioural and behavioural change is slow.
What to record, and what the record is for
Log what you did, not what you felt. This is the same discipline as any other work in this field and it matters more here, because your feelings are the thing most likely to be distorted by hope. Record the message you sent, the reply you received, the interval between them, and the actions you took or declined to take. The log is not there to prove anything. It exists so that a week of selective memory cannot rewrite a month of evidence.
A useful discipline is to fix the observation window in advance and write down what counts as a result before the window opens. Any result arriving after the window has been declared still counts, but only if it was the kind of result you named first. This is a small piece of self-imposed structure, and it removes most of the room for self-deception in this particular corner of the practice.
Signs that the work has stopped being yours
They are not subtle once you know the list. Checking their status more than once a day. Re-reading old messages for meaning. Adjusting your appearance against an imagined audience that has not asked for an audience. Missing sleep, or missing work, because of a phone you keep opening. Declining invitations you would otherwise accept, in case they are seen. The pattern is obsessive attention directed at a question you cannot answer, which is what fixation looks like from the inside.
The instruction in every serious tradition is the same: reduce the intensity rather than increasing it. Fewer workings, shorter, with a longer gap. A practice that has started costing you sleep and relationships has exceeded whatever budget you set for it, and the correct response is to cut it back rather than to push through.
What tools are for, and what they cannot do
Software in this area does one of three things. It reduces a sentence to a glyph, which saves a few minutes and introduces a screen into a moment that used to be private. It stores the glyph, which is convenient until the storage becomes a shrine. It tracks your entries, which is genuinely useful and is the least glamorous of the three. A tool cannot tell you whether your sentence is one you have any right to make, and a good one will not pretend otherwise.
For work on your own conduct, a notebook is at least as good as anything, and it has the advantage that you cannot accidentally share it. A paid application earns its place by making the log easier to keep and by not being intrusive, not by offering a wider range of glyphs to aim at people.
Questions to ask before you charge anything
Can you state the target of this working as a behaviour of yours rather than a feeling of theirs. If not, you do not have a working, you have a wish. Does the sentence name a person who has agreed to take part, or a person who has not been asked. Has this name appeared in previous workings, and if so how many times. Have you written down in advance what would count as a result, and what would count as a null. Finally, have you decided what happens if the answer is no.
That last question is the one that separates work on your own life from everything else in this genre. A practice that can absorb a negative answer without escalation is a practice you can keep for years. A practice that cannot absorb a negative answer will eventually produce behaviour that damages you, and it will do so whether or not anything supernatural was involved.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a love sigil count as consent?
No, and the absence of consent is the objection rather than a technicality. Consent has three parts in any setting that takes it seriously: it must be informed, it must be given freely, and it must be revocable. A glyph naming a person who has not been asked satisfies none of them. The fact that you meant it kindly changes what you intended and not what was agreed, and the person named is the one who would have to agree to something.
Is there any love work that is not problematic?
Work aimed at your own conduct, and work aimed at restoring a bond that both parties originally chose, are lower-risk than manufacturing attraction in someone who has shown no interest. Lower is not the same as safe. Restoration still involves one person who may not want it, so it needs its own consent check. Everything that operates purely on your availability, tone and follow-through is uncontroversial.
Why does everyone say the working comes back on you?
Because the mechanism, if there is one, is your own attention. You have written a sentence naming someone, reduced it, charged it and kept it somewhere. Every one of those steps happens inside your head. What compounds is not the glyph but the loop of checking and re-reading that follows, and the tradition calling that cascading is describing a behavioural pattern rather than a supernatural return.
What am I paying for when I make sigils on my phone?
Mostly convenience you could supply yourself. A generator compresses a sentence to a glyph in seconds instead of a few minutes, which is a real saving and not a real transformation. The log features are worth more than the glyph features, because the log is the part that makes the work verifiable. Anything that stores your glyphs in a feed you revisit is working against you on this kind of intention.
How do I know when to stop a practice?
When it starts costing you something you did not agree to spend. Sleep, work, money and relationships are the four accounts that matter, and the standard is not whether you would choose the expenditure in the abstract but whether you would have chosen it this week. A practice you have to talk yourself into continuing is already over. The tradition's own instruction is to reduce the intensity rather than to increase it.
