This is a reference page about love magic, and the first thing it has to say is the thing that makes the rest possible: a sigil aimed at a specific person overrides that person's stated preferences. That is the objection, it is a real one, and it does not dissolve if you reject the metaphysics. What follows is the vocabulary, the terms, the difference between working on your own behaviour and working on someone else's mind, and the boundaries that hold regardless of which tradition you came from. It is written for someone who is curious rather than converted, and it is not going to pretend the interesting version and the defensible version are the same. The tables below are built to be argued with rather than admired, and the boundaries they describe hold whether or not you accept a single word of the framework underneath them.

The objection, stated as sharply as it can be

The classic ethical objection to love magic is asymmetry of consent. A sigil aimed at a specific person overrides that person's stated preferences, which means the magic does something the other person would have refused. Nothing about the sincerity of the practitioner changes that, and nothing about the strength of the bond changes it either.

Chaos magic's own stated position makes this worse rather than better, because the practitioner's will is the operative ingredient. That is exactly what makes targeting a named individual ethically fraught, and it is worth noticing that the framework does not contain a built-in answer. It tells you the mechanism honestly and leaves the ethics to you, which is either a strength or a hole depending on what you wanted.

The vocabulary, in the terms the sources use

The genre uses a small number of words consistently, and using them precisely is most of the work. The table below separates the ones that get conflated and gives the distinction each one actually carries.

Why reconciliation sits in a different category

Reconciliation magic, aimed at restoring an existing bond rather than creating attraction, is generally treated as lower-risk because a bond already existed. That reasoning is sound as far as it goes and worth extending: if the other person had already chosen you once, the intervention is restoring a prior state rather than overriding a present one.

The limit is obvious and frequently ignored. Restoration still overrides a present decision, and a person who has since moved on has made a present decision. The category is lower-risk, not safe, and the difference matters when you are deciding whether the expected payoff is worth the asymmetry at all.

Cascading, and why the metaphysics is beside the point

Repeated love magic against the same target is widely described in occult sources as cascading: each working increases the pressure, the practitioner reads the increased pressure as progress, and the escalation continues until something breaks. It is usually explained in terms of the intensity of the working.

The better explanation has nothing to do with intensity. It is a feedback loop in the practitioner, where checking for signs of success becomes the activity and the target becomes the justification. Rejecting the metaphysics does not free you from this pattern, which is why the pattern is worth respecting.

  1. Never work the same target twice. The rule is blunt on purpose.
  2. Fix a decision date in advance and stop regardless of outcome.
  3. Do not check for signs. Looking is what makes the loop tighten.
  4. If you find yourself scanning their profile, the working is over.

The only version with a defensible mechanism

If the sigil is aimed at reciprocity, meaning at changing your own attractiveness, availability and communication, then the mechanism is the same one the rest of the field relies on: it commits you to a specific behaviour and keeps the goal salient when a decision is available. That is a modest claim and a checkable one.

It is also the version that works, in the only sense that word can honestly be used here. A working aimed at your own behaviour changes your behaviour. A working aimed at another person's feelings mostly changes the person aiming it.

The table of categories and what each permits

The useful move is to sort the whole genre by what it is allowed to target. The table below does that, and it is the single most important thing on this page.

How the genre talks about the objection

Three moves are common and only one of them is honest. The first reframes consent as irrelevant, on the grounds that the working expresses the practitioner's will and nobody else's is involved. The second points out that people in relationships are not free agents, which is true and not a permission. The third accepts the objection and redirects the whole practice toward self-directed work.

Only the third survives contact with the argument, and it is worth noticing that the practitioners who adopt it tend to be the ones with the most interesting practice. The constraint improved the work rather than limiting it.

A self-directed sequence you can actually run

This is the version the rest of the field should have been recommending all along, and it has the advantage that you can check whether it worked.

  1. Name the behaviour you want to change, not the outcome you want. Behaviour is observable.
  2. Write it as a single imperative sentence with a number in it.
  3. Reduce it, charge it once, and put it away.
  4. Do the boring part on a schedule for eight weeks without re-charging.
  5. Review on the date you set, and decide whether a second cycle is justified.

What to do if you have already worked a target repeatedly

The practical move is to stop, and to stop completely rather than tapering. Tapering keeps the loop running and gives you something to look at while it runs. A clean break is uncomfortable for a few weeks and then it is over.

Write down what you did and when, before you decide how you feel about it. The record is the only part of this that makes the next decision better than the last one, and the urge to skip it is strongest exactly when it would help most.

What the honest version is actually for

It is for the person who is avoiding their own life. That is the demand the genre makes on nearly everyone who comes to it, and the avoidance is rarely about romance. Work aimed at your own availability and communication is difficult in a way that a working aimed at someone else is not, and the difficulty is the entire point.

If you are not prepared to do the difficult version, the correct conclusion is not that the practice is broken. It is that this particular practice is not for you yet, and the genre has a way of disguising that conclusion for years.

What the self-directed version gives you that the aimed version cannot

Aimed work produces a feeling of having acted, which is real and which is why it stays popular. Self-directed work produces a change in behaviour, which is quieter and which compounds. Only one of the two leaves anything behind a year later, and it is not the one the genre advertises.

There is also a practical difference that nobody mentions. Aimed work requires the other person to keep not knowing, which makes every ordinary interaction into an audit. Self-directed work requires nothing from anybody, which means you can do it in front of people without maintaining a story.

The five questions to ask before any love working

The list below is short on purpose. If you cannot answer all five clearly, the answer is not to proceed more carefully, it is to change what the working is aimed at.

  1. Is the target a specific named person, or is this about my own behaviour?
  2. If a person, did they choose this at some point, or am I inventing the history?
  3. Would I be comfortable if they knew exactly what I had done?
  4. What is my decision date, and have I written it down?
  5. Have I done this before, and is this the first repeat?

What to do with the answer you get

Most people who run that checklist discover that the working is aimed at a feeling rather than at a situation, and that is useful information rather than a failure. Wanting somebody to think about you is a normal thing to want. Turning that wanting into a procedure pointed at an identified person is the step that creates the ethical problem, because the procedure is what makes it persistent.

The substitution is straightforward. Take the question you wanted answered by them and turn it into one you can answer yourself. Instead of asking whether they will contact you, ask what would make contact easy if it were going to happen. Instead of working on their availability, work on the conditions under which you would answer if they wrote. The result is a practice you can run in daylight, in front of anyone, with a record you would be willing to show somebody.

  1. Name the situation you want, not the person you want it from.
  2. Write down what you would do differently if it happened next week.
  3. Treat every aim at another person's choices as your own to resolve.
  4. Keep a date, and let the date end the question whether or not it resolved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it manipulative to cast a love sigil on someone?

By most ethical frameworks, including most occult ones, yes. The problem is not the intention but the effect: it removes the other person's ability to choose, and no amount of sincerity on the practitioner's side restores the choice that was removed. The objection holds whether or not you believe the magic does anything, which is the part that makes it difficult to argue away.

What is a reconciliation sigil, and is it different in kind?

It aims at restoring contact with somebody you previously had a relationship with. It is weaker and more defensible than creating attraction where none existed, because a prior bond means the other person chose once. It is still an influence operation, and a person who has since moved on has made a present decision, so it is lower-risk rather than safe.

Do love sigils work at all?

They reliably produce obsessive rumination in the practitioner, which is frequently mistaken for the thing you wanted. The only version with a defensible mechanism is one aimed at reciprocity, meaning your own attractiveness, availability and communication, because that changes behaviour you can observe. Aiming at another person's feelings mostly changes the person aiming.

What should I do if I have already done this repeatedly?

Stop, and stop completely rather than tapering, because tapering keeps the loop alive and gives you something to watch. Write the log you have been avoiding, including the parts that make you look bad, and do not contact anyone involved. Tell one person outside the practice, since the escalation pattern is maintained almost entirely in private.

What does buying a sigil generator for this actually give me?

The tool is not the constraint. Any piece of paper and a private hour will make the glyph. What a paid generator gives you is a cleaner reduction and a stored history of what you have already done, and the second of those is genuinely worth something because a record is the only part of this that makes the next decision better than the last one. It is not permission to aim the result at somebody else.
