MAGÁPE
MAGÁPE is a clarity working, and clarity is the domain where the gap between what a sigil is asked to do and what it can do is most reliably exposed. A clarity aim almost always fails in the same way: it names a state, it gets charged, and nothing becomes easier to decide. The reason is not a flaw in the method. It is that clarity is not a state you can summon, it is the residue of a decision you have already made, and until the decision is made there is usually no shortage of information. There is a shortage of something else. Once that is understood, the working becomes much simpler, and the four ideas underneath it are standard. Attentional control is among the most studied and replicated faculties in psychology, with real training methods. Decision paralysis is usually a conflict between criteria rather than a deficit of data. Projective methods reach material that self-report does not, which is the same reason cards work as thinking tools and not as oracles. And gnosis, in its older sense, is a moment of sustained contact rather than an abstraction, a contemplative discipline considerably older than the movement that borrowed the word.

A name and a decision that was already made
The name was chosen before the aim, which is a mistake worth recording because it happened. A name first, an aim second, and the aim arrived already softened into a general wish for less indecision, which is a description of a mood rather than a target anyone could act on.
The revision came three weeks in and it was a single sentence that began with a choice rather than a state. Two options were already ranked by any reasonable observer, including me, and the sentence named which one would be committed to by Friday. Nothing about the situation changed when the sentence was written. The difficulty had been that the commitment had not been stated anywhere, and therefore never had to be defended.
What the word clarity was hiding
Clarity hides an assumption, and the assumption is that more information would help. Sit with a decision for long enough and the apparent shortage of information usually resolves into a shortage of willingness. The information was there. It had been there for days.
This is why a clarity sigil aimed at understanding so often produces more thought and no more decision, since thinking is what the aim asked for in the only terms the writer knew how to express. The work is to notice which one you have actually been asking for. If the honest answer is that you wanted to understand, then that is a legitimate aim, and it is a different one that should be aimed, charged and evaluated on its own terms.
Criterion conflict, written out
Paralysis is usually two or more criteria in conflict rather than an absence of data. I want the safer option and I want the higher-paying one. I want to be honest with them and I want to protect them. Once the competing criteria are written in a column you can see that no amount of research resolves the question, because the question is not what is true but what to prioritise, and that has no evidence to find.
Writing the criteria is most of the method. A two-column list, one criterion per line, with nothing about solutions, converts a fog into a finite set of named tensions. A sigil built from the chosen priority is then aimed at something that exists, and the log can record whether the priority held under pressure, which is the only thing worth recording about a decision.
The imperative sentence as a diagnostic
The diagnostic move is to write the aim as an imperative sentence and see whether it can be completed. I will decide between the two offers. That works, because the decision exists and can be dated. I will be clear about what I want. That does not work, because clarity is not an action and there is no date on which it can be checked.
Run the aim through the same test you would run a task list entry. Can it be completed, can it be falsified, and would you agree to do it today. If the sentence fails all three, it is not an aim, it is a mood, and a sigil charged for a mood is a sigil for a mood. This one rewriting surfaces more unusable aims than any other check in the practice.
Attention as a trainable thing
Attentional control is one of the better-supported things in this whole domain, which is convenient because it is the input the working actually depends on. It is trainable, the training methods are replicated, and the transfer to tasks you did not practise on is real but partial. Nobody becomes able to concentrate indefinitely by intending to.
The practical consequence is that a clarity working should be scheduled around a trained window rather than a hopeful one. If your reliable attention is twenty minutes after coffee, the decision sentence belongs in those twenty minutes, not in the evening when you have been reading other people's opinions for four hours. Placing the aim where the attention actually is does more than any sigil technique, and the log should record the time of day so this can be checked rather than assumed.
Cards as a surface, not an oracle
Projective methods, the Rorschach among them, reach material that self-report does not, and this is the honest reason cards function in a clarity working. A drawn image has no relationship to your situation that you did not put there, and the absence of that relationship is a feature. You are not asking what the card means. You are using it as a surface to put material onto and then reading your own arrangement.
The discipline is not consulting the card about the decision. It is drawing, writing three or four sentences about what you see, and then asking whether any of it names a criterion you had not listed. When it does, you have gained something. When it does not, that is also information and it should be logged as such rather than interpreted more deeply. The card is a prompt, and a prompt that produces nothing has done its job by producing nothing quickly.
Gnosis, and the discipline in the word
In its older sense gnosis is a moment of sustained contact, not an abstract intellectual position, and it belongs to contemplative traditions considerably older than chaos magic borrowed the term. That older meaning is more useful than the newer one for this work, because it supplies a standard rather than a concept.
The standard is duration. A moment of contact that lasts ninety seconds and ends is a mood. The same moment sustained, with attention returning when it wanders, is a practice, and the returning is the discipline rather than an optional extra. Applied to clarity, this means the sigil is not for the moment of insight, which arrives unasked, but for the repeated return to a decision after the insight has faded and the criteria have started arguing again.
A first sitting, and what happened in it
Twenty-five minutes, mid-morning, one criterion column written before starting and one card drawn. The aim sentence was read five times and the sigil charged. What came up in the sitting was one sentence that had nothing to do with the decision and everything to do with what the decision would cost to explain to someone else.
That sentence went into the log unclassified, and it proved to be the useful part, because it turned out to be a fourth criterion that had not been written down. Adding it changed the decision, which is not what the sigil was supposed to do, and it is a good example of the general pattern: the aim sentence holds the priority in place, and the material that arrives in the sitting is what occasionally tells you the priority was wrong. Log both and keep the columns separate.
What broke in week two
The criteria list was not maintained, and the clarity working failed in the ordinary way, which is that the situation grew more complicated and the sentence stopped meaning anything. A decision that has acquired a new contender is not the same decision, and re-using a sigil for it is aiming at a moved target.
The fix is cheap and it should have been obvious. Each new contender gets its own column, and either the existing sentence is amended and recharged or a second working is opened with a retirement date for the first. Workings that run indefinitely on a single sentence accumulate commitments until the sentence is a summary of everything you have ever wanted, and a summary is not a target.
The log that does not flatter you
A clarity log is a list of decisions and dates, which is a harder thing to maintain than a mood diary because there is nothing to write about unless you decided something. Most weeks have one entry or none, and the empty weeks are the informative ones.
Keep two columns. The date and the decision, one line, in the imperative. And a rating afterwards of whether the decision was still the one you would make now, on a scale from one to five. The second column is where self-flattery gets caught, because a rating of four on a decision you have not revisited in a month is a rating about how you were feeling on the day, not about whether the decision held. Rating at the time, not at the reading.
Clear is not convinced
The most common confusion in this domain is treating resolution as correctness. A decision can be made clearly and be the wrong decision, and a sigil has nothing to say about which. The instrument produces commitment, not accuracy, and those are separate properties that are frequently conflated because commitment feels like evidence.
The distinction is worth holding open in the log itself. Record the decision, record the criterion that was chosen over, and leave the question of whether it was right unrecorded until there is an outcome to judge it by. Clarity workings are most useful when they are attached to a real consequence, because a consequence is what eventually tells you whether the priority you chose was the priority you wanted.
The aim you would write differently now
Written at the end, after six weeks of log entries: I will stop adding reasons and give the deadline already in the calendar its full weight. That is narrower than the original, it is dated, and it is completable, which are the three properties the earlier versions lacked one of between them.
The retrospective aim is almost always better than the prospective one, and that is not a failure of the practice. Clarity requires criteria in conflict, and you cannot know which criteria are in conflict until you have been inside the situation for a few weeks. The first working's job is to produce the log that makes the second working possible, and judging the first by whether it resolved anything is judging it by a standard it was never going to meet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my clarity sigil never change anything?
Because clarity is usually asked for as a state rather than attached to a decision, and a state cannot be completed or falsified. Rewrite the aim as an imperative sentence naming a specific choice with a date on it. If you cannot complete the sentence, you are looking at a mood, and a sigil charged for a mood is a sigil for a mood.
Is decision paralysis really about conflicting criteria?
In most cases, yes. The apparent shortage of information resolves into a set of named criteria in tension, such as safety against income or honesty against protection. Writing them in a column shows that no amount of research will resolve the question, because it is not a question of what is true but of what to prioritise. The method then has to pick a priority rather than find more data.
Should I use cards in a clarity working?
As a surface, not as an oracle. Draw, write three or four sentences about what you see, and check whether any of it names a criterion you had not listed. The card has no information about your situation that you did not supply, which is exactly why it reaches material self-report does not. A draw that produces nothing should be logged as nothing rather than interpreted more deeply.
How do I know the working helped rather than the deadline?
You usually cannot, and the honest log records the timing rather than the cause. Most clarity outcomes arrive through a deadline that existed independently, which is why the aim should be written so the deadline does the work and the sigil holds your attention on the priority. If you want evidence, you would need a control condition, and nobody in ordinary practice is running one.
When should I retire a clarity working?
When the decision is made, or when new contenders make the original sentence refer to something else. Both happen, and both are ordinary. Either amend the sentence and recharge, or open a second working with a written end date for the first. What does not work is continuing indefinitely, because a sentence that has absorbed every new consideration has stopped being a target.
