ESPIRITUALMENTE
A word that describes a quality rather than a being turns out to be the least workable name in a set built for working with entities. Notes on the three limits that were honest, the three failures that were silent, and the one field in the whole apparatus that can actually be tested when the name will not narrow.
Put this into practice
Everything described above costs nothing and works on paper. If you would rather the bookkeeping were handled for you, this is the app built for this particular kind of work.

An adverb is not a name
Entity work has a shape, and the shape mostly comes from a catalogue: a name, a rank, a visible form, an office, and a set of powers. The name is the entry point, and the whole apparatus is designed to be filled in through that entry. Give it a name and it works. Give it a modifier and the apparatus has nothing to attach to, because there is no being described and therefore no row to fill in.
This is not a technicality. It removes the one thing the practice uses to do its work. Every other article in this set begins by narrowing a name down to an office, and narrowing is what makes the rest of the framework usable. Without a name to narrow, the alternative is to invent a whole entry, which is a different activity and a more honest one.
Why the word cannot be narrowed
A narrow office describes something a named being does. This word describes a quality a person might have. You can be more spiritual, less spiritual, spiritual at work and not at home. There is no consistent object behind the phrase, which means there is no consistent set of tasks behind it either, and a task list is the actual mechanism.
Trying to force it produces something that reads like an office and is not one. A phrase about being more present, or more aligned, or more aware is a description of a state, not a function. It cannot be checked for completion because there is no event that counts as the job. Test the sentence by asking what would look different on a Tuesday. If nothing answers, the sentence is not an aim.
The two classical words, and the use that flattens them
Classical usage keeps two words apart that most modern practice runs together. To evoke is to call a spirit so that it appears. To invoke is to bring its influence to operate through the operator. The first is about appearance, the second about effect, and they have different risks, different costs and different paperwork.
Flattening them into one word costs the practitioner the distinction, and the distinction is the whole safety mechanism of the older literature. When a spirit is being asked to appear, you can write down what you perceived. When it is being asked to operate, the only available evidence is your own behaviour, and behaviour needs a third-person record. A practice that cannot tell you which one you are doing cannot tell you whether anything happened.
The catalogue, and what kind of document it is
The source catalogue for most of this framework is a schema, not a report. It is a filing system invented to hold rows: rank, form, office, powers. Reading it as a set of observations about beings is the single most common error in entity work, and the error is not idle. It gives every row a specificity it does not have.
Treated as a schema, the catalogue is genuinely useful. It asks you to state what something does before you charge anything, and it forces the office into a form that can be checked. That is a good instrument. The problem is that schemas get quoted as though they were reports, and once a row has been quoted enough times it stops looking like a filing convention and starts looking like a finding.
Carroll's shortcut, and what it costs
The most influential resolution in the modern tradition treats entities as facets of the practitioner's own mind. It solves the risk problem completely and cheaply: nothing out there, so nothing to be harmed by. It is also, for some people, the reason the practice stopped working on them.
Because the exit is easy, the friction disappears. You lose the thing that made you look at the office carefully, check the record afterwards, and notice that you were inflating. The cost is not safety. It is that you never find out whether you would have kept the discipline without being told the exit was available. Use the exit when you need it. Do not use it as a reason to stop reading the office.
Three honest limits of the whole apparatus
First, the classical distinction between appearance and influence has been mostly flattened, so the older literature's own safeguards are hard to apply. Second, the catalogue is a schema and was read as a report, which means the specifics people quote are artefacts of format. Third, the shortcut that removes the danger also removes the friction, and the friction was doing real work.
None of these limits is fatal. They mean the apparatus is a prompt for structured self-observation, not a technology for contacting anything. If that is what you wanted, it is a reasonable thing to have. If you wanted contact, the apparatus does not deliver it and never did, and the limits are the reason.
The one field you can actually test
Of the four fields, the office is the only one that can be checked. Rank is decorative. Form is a description of appearance and cannot be confirmed or denied without a perceptual report you are generating yourself. Powers are borrowed language from a genre. The office is the only field that names a function, and a function can be checked against behaviour.
So build the working on that field. Write an office that names something a person would recognise as work, narrow it until you can picture a specific week, and write down what would count as the job happening. That last line is the whole test. If you cannot write it, you have not got an office, you have got a mood.
Three ways the working fails quietly
The first failure is the office being too wide to be false. Something like being more present can be reported as complete on any day you want to report it. The second is a charge that was not held long enough to count, which produces a warm evening and no record. The third is building a biography for the word, which is what happens once a modifier has been treated as a name for two months.
All three are invisible from inside, which is why the record has to be opened before the charge rather than after. A record opened afterwards is written to fit. A record opened before is at least capable of being inconvenient, and inconvenient is the only useful property a record can have.
A second charge with the office written down
The repair is unglamorous. Write the office on a separate line, in a single sentence, in words that name behaviour. Then write below it the specific evidence you would accept, in a form somebody else could check. Charge for ten minutes. Put the paper away and do not look at it for a fortnight.
If the fortnight produces nothing, that is a result. It means the office as written was either not achieved or not observable, and both of those are worth knowing. What does not work is going back to the wide version, because the wide version will always succeed and success is the thing that taught you nothing.
The record that would settle it
Three columns: the date, the office as stated, and one observation about your own conduct that was not prompted by the charge. A month of those, and a second person can read it and tell you whether the stated function showed up in your behaviour or whether you have been grading yourself on intensity.
The office is the only field that can be tested, so the test has to be about the office. If a month of records does not show the function anywhere in your conduct, then whatever else is happening, the entity framework produced no functional change, and the honest conclusion is that the name was the part doing the work.
What the word is good for
As a word, it is fine. It names something people actually want, which is to be less scattered. That desire is worth taking seriously, and it does not need a fictional being attached to it in order to be worked with. A modifier that names a state is better served by an aim that names a behaviour, and the behaviour is available to anyone.
The word failed as an entity because entities in this framework need names. It succeeds as a description. Converting it is a small piece of work: take the state you want, find the behaviour underneath it, write the behaviour as an imperative sentence, and let the symbol hold that sentence instead of the adjective.
The name you would write instead
Something narrow, something that names a task, something that could be recognised as work by someone who has never heard the word. Once you have it, the rest of the apparatus behaves the way it was designed to behave: the office narrows, the charge has an object, and the record has something in it to check.
That is the whole repair, and it took four months to arrive at in these notes. The apparatus was never broken. It was handed a word that does not fit, and it did what it does with words that do not fit, which is to fill in whatever fields it can and leave the rest unverified.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does an ordinary word not work as an entity name?
Because the framework uses the name as the entry point to a row: rank, form, office, powers. An adverb describes a quality a person might have rather than a being with a function, so there is no row to fill in. The practical result is that no office can be written, and the office is the only field that can be checked against your own behaviour.
What is the difference between evocation and invocation?
In classical usage, evocation is calling a spirit so that it appears, and invocation is bringing its influence to operate through the operator. Appearance can be recorded as perception; influence can only be evidenced through your own behaviour, in third person. Most modern usage collapses the two, which removes the older literature's main safety distinction.
Is the catalogue of spirits a report or a filing system?
A filing system. The rows were built to organise material, with fields for rank, form, office and powers, and the fields are conventions rather than observations. Treating it as a report is the commonest error in this kind of work, and the error inflates every row with specificity it never had.
Does treating entities as parts of your own mind make the practice safe?
It removes the danger and also removes the friction. The friction was what made people check the office carefully, keep a record, and notice their own inflation. The shortcut is worth having when you need it, and worth setting aside when you are trying to find out whether your practice works.
What should I do if I have already worked with a name that cannot be narrowed?
Convert it. Write the state you were after, identify the behaviour underneath it, and restate that behaviour as an imperative sentence. Charge the sentence, open the record before you charge rather than after, and give the working a fortnight before you decide anything about it. The name was never the part that did the work.
